On looking back over this topic, I note reference to
- c***g1@c***g1.f9.co.uk
- liz@crabby1.forec9.co.uk
Whilst these email addresses / domain names might both be valid and inter-changeable ... I am wondering if the same applies to using the email address variants as the login credentials.
I'm not a force9 user - I cannot be certain which is the correct address format here. Could that have contributed to the encountered difficulty?
On re-reading @MatthewWheeler 's article on SMTP configuration for the different brands, I noted the reference to fred@force9.net ... which seems (at the very least) odd.

Either form of userID should work - as you noted or as stated here - https://community.plus.net/t5/Email/How-to-change-your-outgoing-server-on-a-mail-client/m-p/1606155#... - the email address
I will admit I am confused, are you suggesting above you can use the username or email address?
Looking a the link above for plusnet, free-online (my provider) and force9 show the email setup using the username and NOT the email address.
Other legacy email clients Username format is the full email address.
The plusnet for help email setup here
https://www.plus.net/help/email-guides/how-to-set-up-plusnet-email/ > What settings do I need? This details the above using the Username.
My concern for the matrix in the first link it does not details username@username.<provider*>
*Where provider is plus.com / free-online.co.uk / force9.co.uk
nslookup on f9.co.uk and force9.co.uk resolve to the same IP Addresses
Name: force9.co.uk
Addresses: 212.159.9.4
212.159.8.4
Name: f9.co.uk
Addresses: 212.159.8.4
212.159.9.4
EDIT: I interrupt Email Address Format as the Email Address Format NOT that it can be used for the Username credentials

None of the guides are actually totally clear. The general set up one infers that STARTTLS should be used on inbound servers, which we know is not correct.
On re-reading the SMTP post, I’d agree that it’s open to misunderstanding … given knowledge of what does work. I can state with confidence that email address can be used to login to the Plusnet servers.
Similarly one can log into the user portal using the accounts contact email address.
I do not have the means of affirming one way or another in respect of force9 logon.

I have a help readme for email address setup which I know is correct as your previous posts are the source.
After checking using the telnet authentication method with one of my test email addresses "mailbox@account.free-online.co.uk" I find that I receive a successful 235 ... authentication succeeded
Looks like I need to add this to my email readme note.

To add 'colour' (or is it complication) here I've just ran some tests using webmail (simpler than the SMTP test)...
With a PLUSNET secondary mailbox on my account I can log into webmail using...
- myaccount+mail.address
- mail.address@myaccount.plus.com
- mail.address@mydomain.me.uk
Where mydomain.me.uk is hosted by Plusnet.
Though each is treated as a distinct identity within Webmail.

Works for me as well, with a FREE-ONLINE secondary mailbox on my account I can log into webmail using...
- myaccount+mail.address
- mail.address@myaccount.free-online.co.uk
as you say simpler than the SMTP test, but the SMTP test is still handy for IP Address issues.
