Waitrose POP3 email problems

Since early today I have been unable to send emails using POP3 on my Waitrose account.
I get the following error message:
The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'xxxxxxxxxxxx@waitrose.com'. Subject 'test', Account: 'xxxxxxxxx', Server: 'smtpmail.waitrose.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 relay not permitted', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79
I have replaced personal info with xxxxxxxxxxx
Webmail works and incoming messages are getting through.
Any ideas please?

Re: Waitrose POP3 email problems

Hi Dennis,
I've asked Bob to have a look into this one, but that message is normally when you are trying to use an outgoing mail server that does not belong to your connection.
I take it you are currently connected to your Waitrose Broadband service?

Re: Waitrose POP3 email problems

Are you trying to send using your Plusnet connection Dennis? If not, that's probably what the issue is. I've just tried sending an email from your account and I didn't experience any problems:
$ telnet smtpmail.waitrose.com 25
Trying 212.159.8.242...
Connected to smtpmail.waitrose.com.
Escape character is '^]'.

You'll probably receive the auto-responder.

Re: Waitrose POP3 email problems

OE6 servers setting is showing  smtpmail.waitrose.com which I thought was right and has always been set to that both in my Greenbee & PN days.
I have only a Waitrose PAYG account just so I could keep my Waitrose email address. My only BB connection is my PN one.

Re: Waitrose POP3 email problems

That server address should be fine from a PN connection. In fact I've just tried sending an email from your account using my home Plusnet connection and I didn't encounter any problems.
Open up a command prompt and type.
telnet smtpmail.waitrose.com 25

Press enter and you should get:
[quote author="Waitrose SMTP server"]220 smtp-proxy03.plus.net ESMTP Exim Wed, 15 Dec 2010 15:23:44 +0000
Type:
ehlo waitrose

Press enter and you should get:
[quote author="Waitrose SMTP server"]250-smtp-proxy03.plus.net Hello invalid.tld [80.229.xxx.xxx]
250-SIZE 52428800
250-PIPELINING
250-AUTH LOGIN
250 HELP
Type (substituting 'your_email_address' with your actual email address):
mail from:<your_email_address>

Press enter and you should get:
[quote author="Waitrose SMTP server"]250 OK
Type:
rcpt to:<support@plus.net>

Press enter and you should get:
[quote author="Waitrose SMTP server"]250 Accepted
Type:
data

Press enter and you should get:
[quote author="Waitrose SMTP server"]354 Enter message, ending with "." on a line by itself
Type:
Test

Press enter, then type a single dot.
.

Press enter and you'll get something like this:
[quote author="Waitrose SMTP server"]250 OK id=1PStDn-0006qc-Q0
Type:
quit

Press enter and you should get something like this:
[quote author="Waitrose SMTP server"]221 smtp-proxy03.plus.net closing connection

Connection to host lost.
If any of the above fails, let me know at which point and what it says and we'll take it from there.

Re: Waitrose POP3 email problems

That was going to be my next question Wink
Will be interesting to see whether or not you have problems the next time you're assigned a similar IP?
