Unreliable email addresses?

Yesterday I had difficulty in sending emails to apparently correct addresses. This started when I replied to one addressed to me and got an "invalid email address" retort by the system. Because the sender's address was inserted automatically I cannot see how it suddenly became invalid. Later in the day I had a few addresses, typed by me, also labeled similarly, which I then checked in detail and could not see any reason. Later they worked OK.
It might be a machine problem but it has never been a trouble before. Any ideas?

Re: Unreliable email addresses?

Hi there,
Not sure if these drops that are showing are you disconnecting the router? It looks like they're manual disconnections from our logs, but seeing them on a graph there's a few too many there for comfort - perhaps that was it?

EDIT: To clarify (sorry) I was wondering if the line was dropping when trying to send the email, thus meaning part of the headers weren't sent and leading to the error - I suggest this because we've seen faults that look like authentication issues with incorrect username and password actually being caused by line drops while the router is attempting to connect. I wondered if this could be something similar.

Re: Unreliable email addresses?

@ Colintivy
Was it an email bounce back from their server or a warning from your client program? In the case of bounce back it in all probability was a temporary issue with the recipient's mail server.
That's RPM to you!!

Re: Unreliable email addresses?

Thanks both. I have not been disconnecting on purpose at all, but the idea of some occurring during the unsuccessful sendings does seem likely  as you suggest. I have not had any repeats of dodgy emails since. I had error messages from both external and internal sources but not at the same time..
However I am shocked at the apparent density of drop-outs shown in your log. I have had some electricity cuts by the supply company for maintenance lasting some hours recently and have been monitoring my line speed and S/N ratios daily to see if they have suffered. These have shown some adverse effects in that speeds and ratios have been going up and down like a fiddler's elbow but not to a drastic degree. I half expected to have to go through a 10 day retraining period each time but there is no sign of that. When I have time I will post my figures for the time span of your log to see if there is any correlation that you can see. Sadly my observations may not fit the pattern of drops.

Re: Unreliable email addresses?

@ Matt/RPM,
Herewith some figures from my N.Belkin router to chew over:-
    Date/Time             Line speed  S/N ratio
20/09/13  14.24         6016Kb       11db
21/09/13                   Not measured.
22/09/13  11.19         5600Kb        13db
23/09/13  17.34         4064Kb        15db
24/09/13  11.07         5152Kb        12db
25/09/13  10.59         4768Kb        13db
Today,
28/09/13  13.20         6176Kb         12db (has been for a day or two)
Your log shows the last power cut from 09.30 to 13.55 on 20/09/13, presumably our exchange may have been affected by it. The array of frequent disconnections after the cut suggest that something did not work as well as before. I certainly was nowhere near the keyboard at near midnight on 21/22 (in bed and asleep!). I wonder what subsequent logs show? It looked as though an improvement may have taken place.
I have not had any disrupted outgoing emails since starting this thread.

Re: Unreliable email addresses?

Thanks Bob,
Adam gave me an update like yours in Routers as well. I started a fresh thread there because I thought that I had drifted off topic here. Perhaps it would be as well to stick to that one right now.
My line speed and SNR have been remarkably stable over this period so far (see figures in #4).. I wonder if they (BT) have found a fault, shot DM driver or something? In the past SNR has been as low as 9db with speeds in the 6000K region (not often) but speed and SNR have also been very turbulent as well for months.

Re: Unreliable email addresses?

Hi Bob,
I cannot find Adam's post now so have come back here!
It seems that all has gone very well with my connection at last. The line speed and noise margin have been steady as a rock for weeks now, 6720Kb and 11 dbs. I presume that the log does not have much in the way of drops on it. Do you agree? BTO must have done something very good, my connection has never been as good in something like 8 year's duration.

Re: Unreliable email addresses?

Thanks Bob,
It is strange that the few drops are all in the early morning. Any clues about these or are they just down to BT activity?

Re: Unreliable email addresses?

The drops on the 8th and the 13th could have been BT maintenance given the time of night and disconnection reason. The disconnection on the 10th looks to have been initiated by something at your side.

Unlikely - the regular overnight BT maintenance doesn't happen on weekend nights.

Re: Unreliable email addresses?

Certainly none of them could have been from here. Router is on 24/7 and I am in bed at those times!! Bob indicated the they indicate a reason, I wonder what that was?
