Turnpike Revisited

Turnpike has been mentioned in this forum a few years ago, but things may have moved on. I am a refugee from Demon/vodaphone who are about to turn off their mail service. I am considering migrating to Plusnet for my broadband provider but am keen to keep using Turnpike 6.07.  It looks as though the basic mail servers (POP3 and smtp) will be OK but the following questions remain:-

1. Is the connection to the server from Turnpike un-encrypted, or SSL/TSL? if the latter then I'm stuck.

2. Given I setup a mailbox for say admin@myusername.plusnet.co.uk, will that be enough to catch all emails for tom@myusername.plusnet.co.uk, dick@myusername.plusnet.co.uk, harry@myusername.plusnet.co.uk and so on, so that Turnpike can collect them all (and then use its routing rules to get them to the correct seat).

Or do I have to setup separate mailboxes for tom dick and harry, with the problem that they have to be separately collected.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Turnpike Revisited

Fix

Welcome to the Community forum. Smiley

The answers to your questions are:

  1. Plusnet incoming and outgoing email connections currently don't use SSL/TLS so you should be OK with that.
  2. The service will probably have catch-all turned off when email is first activated but it's easy to turn that on using the control panel. So that should be OK.

When setting up email for the first time you are asked to provide a mailbox name which becomes the default. This can be any name you like, so admin would be fine. The associated email address will be admin@accountname.plus.com . I'm using accountname (the name you sign up with) there to avoid confusion since I'll be using username as a field title later.

For collecting mail to admin@accountname.plus.com the username you enter into the email client will be just accountname with the password for accountname. The point is that Turnpike needs to allow the username entry to differ from the email address. I doubt that will be a problem but thought I'd mention it just in case.

With catch-all turned on emails sent to anything@accountname.plus.com will go into the admin mailbox and be collected along with mail directly to admin.

Re: Turnpike Revisited

Many thanks for the clarification - that gives me confidence that it will work. So I can start the migration process to Plusnet!

Re: Turnpike Revisited

Still happily using Turnpike here.

Getting more difficult with new Windows software, but is working in Win 10.

Wow, there's a blast from the past Smiley I too remember Turnpike from my Demon Internet days. Glad to hear it's still going.

Struggling on to get up and running! I am still on Demon broadband - connection to Plus broadband in another couple of weeks. I can now receive emails fine via the Plus mailbox, but can't get outgoing to work.. The Connect section is set to relay.plus.net, and all my domain names ect set to envex.plus.com. Here is an example of a Delivery Status Notification when I send an email via Plus to a Gmail address. Bear in mind that the actual broadband is Demon, but that is not mentioned anywhere in Connect.

and the corresponding Log file from the Connect process is here:-

I just can't see why this doesn't work other than the fact that the broadband is Demon not Plus.

Any advice please?

Re: Turnpike Revisited

Hi Chris,

Until your broadband service transfers to Plusnet you won't be able to send emails using the Plusnet relays. This is because authentication is required when not using a Plusnet connection and only users with an active subscription service are allowed that option. In the mean time you would have to use the Demon relay for sending.

If you wish you can use Plusnet webmail to send messages. In fact checking your sender identity in webmail (within Personal Settings) is correct would be worthwhile.

Edit: Since these forums are publicly available, publishing private information is generally best avoided. This is particularly so for email addresses which spammers are always seeking. The server transaction shown in the image you posted looks fine to me (apart from the expected "relay denied" error). A quick way to clear privacy issues would be to edit the post and remove the image if you wish. Smiley
