I was using port 25 but after a problem I was advised by someone at PN to use port 110. I can't remember why but maybe someone can tell us if it makes any difference

The "official" outgoing server is relay.plus.net though smtp.plus.net is still supported. Plusnet accept connections on port 25 but mobile service providers often block access to third-party relays using that port. Plusnet also support port 587 and using that generally works from a mobile network.
When connected via a mobile network outgoing mail authentication needs to be set up for relay.plus.net. Authentication can also be used on home Wi-Fi so no need to change settings.

Thanks for that info. I remember now I was having problems and it was suggested I changed to port 587 which solved the problem for me.

Thanks everyone who replied to my email. However, I am still a little confused. I set the ingoing and outgoing to mail.plus.net & relay.plus.net respectively on my phone. Do I set the router to incoming 110 and outgoing 587? I have a TP-Link router - is the VCI and VPI the in and out port? What is the VCI and VPI?

VCI and VPI are to do with you broadband connection, nothing to do with email settings. Please leave them as they are (0 & 38) otherwise you will have problems with the whole Internet.
That's RPM to you!!
