Setting up email on android smart phone?

Just graduated to a cheap smartphone. At home I use Thunderbird to receive and send messages on my PN accounts and also my gmail and hotmail accounts.
I'm showing my age and ignorance, I know, but can someone advise me the settings I need for the phone to enable receipt and senfing of emails? Please!

There is a generic set up guide for Android devices here. Specific settings can be found on your Member Centre Connection Settings page. You will probably find using the IMAP incoming server works best for you.

From instructions is

I think that's saying that username@ username.plus.com has to be set up willy-nilly and only after that can separate IDs and mailboxes be created.
Is that correct?

No you can just set up the additional ones but then it won't pick up those from the default email
I have never ever used the default one which wasn't even there when I first used the email

but for some reason (me or other ) I tried to use only the mailbox personal to me and the whole lot was rejected.

I assume that you did use the format username+mailbox name
I set it up on my better half's tablet with no problem
