I do wonder how the senders knew that the two posters above have Plusnet services ?

Re: Scam email asking me to verify my email address

Anything@account.plus.com is a giveaway for being a Plusnet customer … and there’s plenty of addresses which have been compromised by various companies.

@Townman  I don't buy your standard response. These emails seem to be more specifically targeted.

Re: Scam email asking me to verify my email address

Not a “standard” response but a logical one.  In what way do you suggest that these are targeted beyond clearly being sent to Plusnet email addresses?

Given a pool of email addresses harvested from a multitude of data breaches it does not take a genius to work out which ones are Plusnet users and a user’s account name.  Plusnet have announced plans to migrate users and their intent to communicate, with the consequences that people will be expecting an email and thus be less alert to the risk of being scammed.  Such creates an ideal opportunity for chancers.

These emails do not say “Dear Fred” they have a generic salutation.  I have never used my naked Plusnet email address (I have a hosted domain name), consequently that plus.com address has never been leaked.

I do not get spam email to the naked Plusnet email address, but I do to addresses which have been leaked by third parties.  Having made it my practice to give all third party businesses unique email addresses I can identify the source of the data breaches.

@Townman  I agree with your response.

Having dealt with email systems since the early 90's It's just a gut feeling that something isn't as it seems.

Re: Scam email asking me to verify my email address

Off topic - seems we were both on the leading edge of email implementations.  I launched my company’s “Networked Office” in the early ‘80s over X400, leading the launch in Australia at Melbourne 1985 IIRC.  In those days, it was specialist and expensive!

@Townman  I started running the Company's new Data General Computer system back in 1980. I had no experience having never seen a computer before. Fascinating times.....

Re: Scam email asking me to verify my email address

@Champnet

DG gave me 14 years of employment, first six were spent charging around West London, Berkshire and Oxfordshire fixing all manner of DG supplied equipment; car full of, tools, spares, disk packs and my trusty oscilloscope.

Re: Scam email asking me to verify my email address

@Dan_the_Van  The engineers looking after our systems would use a scope to diagnose faulty boards. DG then moved to swapping out boards. Good for the customer but not the engineers…..
