SMTP down (again)

Getting this when trying to send e-mails:

"An error occurred while sending mail: The mail server sent an incorrect greeting:  Cannot connect to SMTP server 212.159.8.107 (212.159.8.107:25), connect error 10060."

Also, the Portal is timing out and it's taking ages to log in to Community.

Both SMTP and Portal are timing out in ping and tracert.

As ever, no indication on the Service Status page.

Re: SMTP down (again)

Hi @thejudge,

Please accept my apologies for the issue with outgoing mail and logging into the community.

I'm not currently aware of any outages, are you still experiencing the issue? I have tested your broadband service which appears stable while operating with the estimates speed, this test has dropped the connection temporarily.

If you are still experiencing the issue, please log into webmail then try to send a test email and let us know if you receive an error.

Thank you.

Re: SMTP down (again)

I can't send email (relay.plus.net on port 587) from outside the Plusnet network (O2) It keeps saying my SMTP Authentication credentials are incorrect as of this morning. Nothing's changed my end & it was working up to yesterday.

Re: SMTP down (again)

Hello @southerner,

Sorry to hear this is happening, just for clarity so we can help further;

  • Are you sending mail through Plus.net/webmail or the email client on your device?
  • Have tried alternative browsers if you are using our webmail directly?
  • Have you recently change you Plusnet password, if so you will need to enter the account username and mailbox  password on the outgoing server authentication details.

Please let us know how you get on.

Re: SMTP down (again)

@SammyM - I'm using the Gmail app on my phone and haven't changed my Plusnet password.

Edit - It's working now, I just checked.

Re: SMTP down (again)

Ah Glad to hear that @southerner.

Should this occur again, please try webmail on you mobile data so that we can determine if it is solely client related.

Re: SMTP down (again)

@southerner

This very much sounds like an external networking issue - a data connectivity issue in the cell you were connected to.

@thejudge

You do not specify if you are connecting direct to the PlusNET network (from home) or by some other means.

Can you connect to other services successfully?

Re: SMTP down (again)

The issue (whatever it was) now seems ot have cleared, but it's curious that it should happen in an identical way to the last time. As far as I could tell, no other service or website was affected.

For info, I was connecting from home over +Net ADSL using Thunderbird as e-mail client.

I can't believe that this has happened yet again!

Re: SMTP down (again)

It's come back now, but it always does after a while. Would still love to know what's doing it though.

Re: SMTP down (again)

I’m still chasing this. The SMTP servers do not respond to pings by design. So ping / tracert will not help.

There are a number of fail points which can give intermittent ‘password’ failures - I’ve seen 2-3 in the last week or so. Sometimes it’s just one mailbox others 3-4. Typically a few minutes later it’s all fine.
