I've not really had the time to play around with these issues as I'd hoped (and the deleted post one in the other thread), so this could be a red herring - but it may be something connected with javascript, I need to play more to substantiate or disprove that.
Regarding the Spam/Junk unread message count Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail etc all display the correct count without needing to goto or refresh the folder.
Having mentioned Javascript,  that reminds me about the recent important Java update, presumably everyone is now using jre6-u31. (not connected to the issue mentioned).

Javascript is different to Java and is embedded in whatever browser you are using. There's no actual link between what Java version you have installed and how javascript works.
The number you quoted is for Java release 6 - update 31, which has also been updated by Apple for their OS X computers.
That's RPM to you!!

Done a little bit more playing, I'm pretty sure this is related to javascript and in view of your recent post about NIS and login, my guess is it's NIS interfering with things and is what's giving you all the problems you've mentioned.

Sorry - but NIS is irrelevant to this issue.
As well as my home machine which is running NIS, the same thing is happening on both my office machine (definitely as I've mentioned previously) and (I think) my laptop, neither of which has NIS installed.
On my office machine virus protection/firewall functions are handled centrally and on my laptop I'm using Windows Firewall and AVG Free.

Ok, trying to get a bit more clarity on the issues. I'd forgotten you were getting some issues on more than one machine (and more than one browser) but it certainly wasn't stated that you only has NIS on the one machine.
I've not been able to replicate any of these problems yet on two machines both XPSP3 one with FF 10.0.2, the other FF 11.0, both are running AVG Free 2012, the latter AVG SP1.
Looking back over your posts, and in all instances before you refresh (by any method)
1) on almost all occasions the Unread count in RC is less than that in SM ?
2) Has the Unread count in the Folder column been less than the number of unread emails in the list on any other occasions than that one where you used IE8 at work ?
3) Does the Unread count in the Folder column always match that on the Browser tab ?
4) Out of curiosity, can you check the setting in >Personal Settings >Mailbox View >New Message (2nd box) >Check for new messages on ?

1 - without a detailed check I cannot be sure - since I know the SM check hasn't always showed the correct numbers
2 - without a detailed check I cannot be sure - remember the problem only occurs momentarily and I haven't recorded all instances
3 - I think so but I haven't been checking that particular issue religiously
4 - "every 1 minutes(s)" which next box ("Check all folders for new messages") unchecked

@drj, your problem is odd. I probably don't receive enough email to my own account to try replicating it so I'll sign up to some busy mailing lists and keep an eye on things. I'd be interested to know whether or not the problem is still evident if you enable the 'Check all folders for new messages' option though?

This evening RC and SM were both showing 39 emails in my inbox but SM was reporting incorrectly that 35 were unread whereas RC was correctly reporting 36 were unread.

Just to say that I get this too.
Not often but it does happen.
Roundcube shows some messages.
View a message then go "back to inbox" and more (older) messages have appeared.

To be honest I've never had it that bad - but it's happening on a regular basis, not every time but maybe 2-3 times a week. This lunchtime for instance it happened again - Inbox was showing a certain number, click on Inbox, the page refreshes, larger number appears - it was something like 21 to 26 today though I've given up recording every instance

It happened again this evening - opened up RC, inbox noted 63 unread emails, which within a second changed to 54 unread emails; but when I clicked in Inbox it changed to 64 unread emails...
