Hi - sorry there was one shield I hadn't turned off - I have disabled standard shield and mail now sends so looks like this is an avast issue after all! Will post again after further investigation.

I think the setting you're looking for is in the advanced tab for mail shield in Avast, I use the free version as well.  There are 2 options there, scan incoming mail, and scan outgoing mail, unticking the option to scan outgoing mail seems to work. I'm at work at the mo, so I'm working from memory, lol!!
Does anyone know if this option has always been in Avasty, or is it a recent addition?
