Re: Problems sending PN email to Gmail addresses

Four test messages sent this morning to four different Gmail addressees.

All delivered instanlty.

That's 100% success two days running.

Nothing has changed about my account and it doesn't make sense to me that one PN user (in this case me) is getting this result when others (including Townman) are still having messages delayed or disappear.

Surely if the theory is correct that Google are treating all messages from @account.plus.com addresses as if they were coming from a single domain (plus, com), thereby triggering a spam alert, this should affect all PN customers in a random manner rather than consistently favouring one over another?

Re: Problems sending PN email to Gmail addresses

Today I too been able to have a conversation with a gmail contact in real time / without delays and without having to resort to substituting gmail with googlemail.  It does seem like this problem has gone away, for now / until the next time it crops up.

Thanks to @Townman @MisterW for their considerable contributions to this topic.  Pity there wasn't much input from PN staff.

Re: Problems sending PN email to Gmail addresses

To be fair, there has been a fair deal of input from the back room PN staff in the SU discussion area.

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

Re: Problems sending PN email to Gmail addresses

So why can't they say something publicly?

Surely there have been enough posts both in this topic and the one about the problem with sending to MS accounts from users about how the deafening silence from PN give the impression that they are not treating their customers with respect?

Re: Problems sending PN email to Gmail addresses

Sadly, no - I'm afraid the p;roblem hasn't entirely gone away.

After two fdays of consistent instant deiiveries to Gmail addresses, I:ve had mixed results today. Some instant deliveries, some messages delivered late (mostly between 5 and 60 minutes delay approx) and one email that's gone missing altogether.

Before we can declare the problem has 'gone away' we surely need to be sure an email will arrive within a minute or two, don't we? Otherwise there's always a nagging doubt - and that's not something anyone associates with  a fully functional modern email service..

@stuck

Generally, by protocol the 'back room' folks do not comment on the forums; it is more productive that they expend their time seeking solutions.  I agree that comms could be better, but I would rather have efforts focused on finding solutions.

Looking at my latest tests to Microsoft it looks as though there is something utterly bonkers being done by Microsoft: from the same test account, using the SAME sent item (reopen in edit mode and send again) using the following from addresses identities (in webmail)...

  1. The real emailbox name
  2. A hosted domain email address (having not relation to the underlying mailbox)
  3. An alternative @sameaccount.plus.com identity

1 & 2 went direct to the INBOX, whilst 3 went to the SPAM folder.  Microsoft is smoking some strong skunk!!

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

I can understand the protocol about not commenting on the open forums but at least a couple of them ought to make time to speak to their customers, if only briefly.  Failing that, for you  /other Superuser to be able to act as genuine spokespersons and give updates that are officially sanctioned as being 'on behalf of PN'.  It would sweeten everybody's mood no end.

Re: Problems sending PN email to Gmail addresses

@Townman No.3 may be a function of the email client.

When I was doing some testing for myself, I had several addresses in the "To" field. A couple went to the respective INBOX and one arrived in the SPAM folder - Outlook for microsoft 365. The one that arrived in the SPAM folder was for an xxx.yyy@outlook.com account that I seldom use - it does not have any addresses in the contacts list. (I'm sorry to be imprecise about this) There was an option to say it was not spam and after that emails sent to that account arrived in the In INBOX.

@IMM

The Microsoft space is as clear as mud.  To be clear all of the emails were sent by the same email client, using different email identities.  The target email accounts were the same - Outlook and Gmail.

Re: Problems sending PN email to Gmail addresses

More on this Plusnet customer's recent experience with emailing Gmail addresses -in the hope that feedback is of some use to the PN back room team:

YESTERDAY:

Emails sent to 4 different Gmail addresses in the morning - all delivered instantly.

One further message sent in late afternoon at 5.44 pm delayed eight and half hours and arrived at 2.18 am this morning.

TODAY

Six test emails to various Gmail addresses through the day.

Two delivered instantly. The other four delayed by: 8 minutes, 9 minutes, 25 minutes, 2 hours 3 minutes.

Damned if I can find any logic or pattern in all that!

Peter,

Indeed - the set up stuffing them up the line to Gmail is the same for which delivery is accepted promptly, slothfully or not at all!

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

Re: Problems sending PN email to Gmail addresses

So when is Plusnet (I mean the senior management, not the technical team) going to communicate with its customers?

What does the company plan to do about an email service that is currently dysfunctional, with no resolution evidently in sight?

What is the status of the plan for PN  to cease being an email provider at all and transfer email accounts to a third party business in Greenby?

For a reputable business owned by the BT giant, the continuing management silence is indefensible - and not remotely excused by the argument that "it's all Google's fault".

Re: Problems sending PN email to Gmail addresses

@PeterB1 As @Townman  is not back here until tomorrow afternoon, I shall attempt to answer some of you questions above, but please note I unfortunately don't have the same access to the company that he has.

(1) As long as I’ve been here - 13 years  - 'senior management' have never communicated directly with the customers.

(2) I would expect, and guess from information seen, that there are people working to resolve the issue.

(3) As I understand it, that movement of the Plusnet (and associated) email service is still planned, but has been paused due to technical considerations - to which I am not privy.

(4) It is Google who have 'moved the goalposts' - nothing has changed on the PN side.
