NDR messages are normally received on an expanding time line. I.E. after 1 hr, 2 hr, 5 hr etc..
A 5 day wait could have terrible consequences, something is seriously wrong..............

For receiving service “back off deferment” 5 days elapsed of retries before raising an NDR is aligned to the RFC. As an adjunct an interim NDR might be sent, but that would be over and above the specification.

@Townman So the retries should each generate a message back to the sender before finally giving up ?

No, back offs do not give rise to NDRs.
i have raised a question on are back off (deferred delivery) NDRs like OOO notifications - you only ever get one.

Does that not then explain why no one is getting NDRs?

No, it does not. What I meant is that during the back off period, interim NDRs are optional. At the end on “I’m abandoning retries” there ought to be a final NDR. I have only ever seen one of these.

New variation for me today.
1) I received an NDR (only the second time this has happened)
2) it wasn't five days after sending or anywhere near that. The NDR arrived in my Plusnet inbox less than four hours after I sent an email to a Gmail address I own myself.
Another email sent at 10.53 to a Gmail address owned by my wife was delivered at 14.37.

"ought to" seems to be the key bit of your reply. I've yet to see an NDR from any of the disappeared messages I've sent to gmail accounts in recent weeks.

A pattern has emerged in the last couple of days that I haven't seen before. Yesterday and today, I sent two emails from my PN account - one each to a couple of different Gmail addresses. They both arrived late, but at exactly the same time. Today, the emails were sent at 11.05 and both were delivered at 19.38. Earlier in the week, a pair of emails arrived instantly at two different Gmail addresses, but that proved to be a false dawn. Some emails to Gmail recipients are still disappearing for ever..
Finally, without wishing to understate the consistently excellent help we get from Superusers, especially Townman on this topic, the silence from the Plusnet business remains deafening. Never mind how difficult this is to resolve. Never mind if it's all Google's fault. The fact is Plusnet is providing a service, mostly for very loyal customers, which is not up to scratch. Plusnet as a company should speak to us. Just necessary business practice. No excuses. End of.

Today, I received a message from an @gmail contact at about 8:30 am and I replied around midday. My reply was delivered as promptly and I got a reply to my reply about 20-30 mins later. In other words, my experience today has been as it always used to be.
However a sample of one it not statistically valid so today's experience tells us nothing about whether or not this problem has been resolved.

I sent messages to two Gmail recipients at 10.48 this morning and neither has been delivered, so no miracles in my neck of the woods!

More on that emerging pattern.
Two messages sent to different Gmail addresses at 10.48 am yesterday morning and both arrived at 3.20 am today. That's sixteen and a half hours late but delivered at exactly the same time

Which kind of points to Gmail deferring and/or refusing acceptance at their 'discretion'.
