Plusnet webmail. You have some bloody nerve!

So I get an email today...

Your username: myusername

Hello my real name

We're writing to let you know that your Plusnet email account is getting pretty big, and it's taking up quite a lot of space on our servers. Please can you spend a minute or two deleting or downloading some of your older and/or unwanted messages?

We want you to enjoy your Plusnet email account, but we do ask that you try to keep the combined size of your mailboxes below 1GB. This helps us keep things ticking over nicely and is mentioned here in our Acceptable Use Policy:

http://www.plus.net/info2/legal/aup.html#email

In order to assist you with taking action, here is a list of your largest mailboxes -

        Mailbox         Size
        default         1203.848 MB
        Total           1203.852 MB

We'll check back with you in a week's time, and if you're still storing lots of email on our servers then we might need to archive some of your messages. Archived email is kept safe for 30 days before we delete it permanently, and  you can ask for the emails to be restored at any point during this 30 day period.

The easiest way to reduce the size of your mailboxes is to delete some older messages using Webmail -

Your webmail service is the single most shoddy and unfit for purpose piece of software I've ever tried to use, it also happens to be one that has never worked for the 10+ years I've been a Plusnet customer.   I tried logging in today to on the off chance that it's been updated or been given a kick, but now.  It just sits there doing nothing no matter what I ask it to do.

It's your fault that all that [-Censored-] has collected and built up, not mine.  So please, stop with the patronising emails and sort your webmail software out first.  This is the 21st Century, that webmail software is like something from the 1990s.

Re: Plusnet webmail. You have some bloody nerve!

Hi there, we're aware there are performance issues that we continue to investigate, but if things have never worked for you in over a decade of use then there's something else afoot Huh

I assume you're not using the account then? Any objection to us clearing it out and black holing it?

Of course I use the account, I just use it via Thunderbird rather than that god awful, broken thing you call a webmail interface.  You can delete all the mails if you want, but I still need to use the account.

Re: Plusnet webmail. You have some bloody nerve!

You should be able to clear the mail using Thunderbird in which case. Are you relying on POP3 or IMAP? Is it only a single instance, or are there multiple devices polling for mail?

Using POP3 on Thunderbird via my desktop and a laptop, and I have Thunderbird set to only leave messages on the server for 7 days.  But seeing as how they've built up, something isn't working somewhere.

Re: Plusnet webmail. You have some bloody nerve!

Very odd. Assuming Thunderbird's configured the same way on both machines it should be fine. Will try and take a look if I find the time next time I'm in the office.

Re: Plusnet webmail. You have some bloody nerve!

Have you tried accessing the mailbox using the basic webmail interface: https://webmail.plus.net/squirrelmail/src/login.php

In it's options you can set the number of messages per page way higher than the normal webmail which makes deleting messages easier. I've just gone in to a mailbox with nearly 1000 messages and it came up pretty quickly with a page listing them all.

No, the webmail portal has never worked once in all my years.  That's across multiple versions of Windows (from XP to W10) and using all manner of different browsers.   It has just never worked.

Re: Plusnet webmail. You have some bloody nerve!

I'm guessing @bobpullen will be along some time soon to confirm that he doesn't have any problems accessing your mailbox(s) using webmail.

I am surprised neither the standard nor the basic work as they are totally different software platforms.

What goes wrong when you try each of them?

Re: Plusnet webmail. You have some bloody nerve!

I can't see anything wrong with the account that would cause persistent problems logging into the Webmail platform Huh

It seems all of the offending messages are sat in the Trash folder though:

. list """*"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "." "INBOX.Drafts"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "." "INBOX.Trash"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "." "INBOX.Sent"
* LIST (\HasNoChildren) "." "INBOX.Spam"
* LIST (\Unmarked \HasChildren) "." "INBOX"
. OK LIST completed
. status INBOX messages
* STATUS "INBOX" (MESSAGES 0)
. OK STATUS Completed.
. status INBOX.Drafts messages
* STATUS "INBOX.Drafts" (MESSAGES 0)
. OK STATUS Completed.
. status INBOX.Trash messages
* STATUS "INBOX.Trash" (MESSAGES 11743)
. OK STATUS Completed.
. status Inbox.Sent messages
* STATUS "Inbox.Sent" (MESSAGES 0)
. OK STATUS Completed.
. status INBOX.Spam messages
* STATUS "INBOX.Spam" (MESSAGES 1)
. OK STATUS Completed.

@Azagoth, I assume you've no problem with me clearing this out for you?

@bobpullen

Could it be that the OP is having the same trouble that I notified you about several weeks ago. If you remember I mentioned that I have a Trash folder which refuses to be emptied or purged. At the time you even renamed that folder to 'Old Trash' in the hope I could delete it but attempting to do so only generated the following error message..

BTW I still have that 'Old Trash' folder and although no longer subscribed to it the folder has grown bigger!

@bobpullen sure, go ahead and empty the trash folder if you can.  I can't even access it, it just sits there like always with that 'loading' circle rotating.

Re: Plusnet webmail. You have some bloody nerve!

If you can get in to webmail you should have been able to right click on trash to empty it with left clicking on it first.
