Plusnet mail server blacklisted

Just that. My husband sent an email earler today to friends in Australia and it bounced back with the message:
Final-recipient: rfc822; xxxxxxxx@bigpond.net.au
Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 550 5.7.1 Connection refused. 212.159.14.17 is blacklisted in ReturnPath RPRBL List. See https://senderscore.org/blocklistlookup/

Can't submit anything via the link given as it's the server and not our IP address that's been blocked.

Happened a few weeks ago too. I'm assuming a Plusnet customer has been sending out spam or something.

Re: Plusnet mail server blacklisted

Not that it's any help, @Mad_Moggies , but someone else reported that same domain as rejecting a PN email earlier this week, can't remember where I saw it though. I can't see much spam going out through the relay though, it is generally quite strict.

Re: Plusnet mail server blacklisted

I suspect your IP address is listed on Spamhaus PBL. If you find out your WAN IP at whatismyIP.com then using the Spamhaus lookup tool https://www.spamhaus.org/lookup/ does it show as listed? If it is listed then it could be that the sending mail server isn't 'authenticating' properly and you may have to use relay.plus.net to send mail

Re: Plusnet mail server blacklisted

@Thrall That 'blacklisted' address is the PN mailserver, not @Mad_Moggies IP.

Re: Plusnet mail server blacklisted

Yep. The mail server doesn’t show listed on Spamhaus. Based on the error they’re getting I suspect the wan IP is listed with Spamhaus.

@Mad_Moggies are you sending mail using relay.plus.net or another mail server?

Re: Plusnet mail server blacklisted

@Thrall I thought this bit: - Final-recipient: rfc822; xxxxxxxx@bigpond.net.au
Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 550 5.7.1 Connection refused. 212.159.14.17 is blacklisted in ReturnPath RPRBL List. See https://senderscore.org/blocklistlookup/

was the important item where Return Path are claiming the PN server IP was blacklisted.

Re: Plusnet mail server blacklisted

Yeah that's what's puzzling me. If the Plusnet server itself was blacklisted I'd imagine there'd be a lot more reports here. That IP's not showing as listed on Spamhaus: http://spamhaus.org/query/ip/212.159.14.17

Re: Plusnet mail server blacklisted

I think ReturnPath are a bit 'off' - I'm sure they were the culprits in the previous example I saw.

Re: Plusnet mail server blacklisted

No, it's not my WAN IP address, which I know and is fixed*, but the Plusnet mail server address. I don't run a mailserver on our home network as we use Plusnet mail servers at relay.plus.net.

*As shown below, disguised just enough to show it's not the address that's shown in my original posting as being blacklisted. The 192.168 etc address is my husband's computer's address, as reserved on our home network.

Before the part of the message that I posted, it says:

Delivery to the following recipients failed permanently:

  * xxxxxx@bigpond.net.au

Reason: A message that you sent to the following recipient could not be delivered due to a permanent error. ** The remote server ?? responded with: ** xxxxxx@bigpond.net.au ??:?? This message was created automatically by mail delivery software on the server .

Reporting-MTA: dns; avasout02 [212.159.14.17]
Received-From-MTA: dns; [192.168.0.4] [212.159.4X.XXX]

Re: Plusnet mail server blacklisted

I use relay.plus.net. I wouldn't want the bother of running my own mailserver!

It wasn't Spamhaus anyway but one called Validity. See the link on the returned email https://www.senderscore.org/blocklistlookup/ , which I haven't reported on as it's not my address that was blacklisted by them.

Re: Plusnet mail server blacklisted

@Mad_Moggies I reckon @bigpond.net.au should stop relying on senderscore - either they or ReturnPath have got their knickers in a twist.

Re: Plusnet mail server blacklisted

Yes John. We had the same thing happen a few weeks ago and it got through eventually. A few years ago we kept getting our emails, all sent via relay.plus.net to BigPond/Testra blocked and, rather than using our joint plusnet address, had to use our personal and non-plusnet email addresses till it got fixed, so I think they are, as you say, a bit 'off'!

Re: Plusnet mail server blacklisted

If it was a few weeks ago or more recently (looking back at your reply where you mention it) then no it wouldn't be me. I didn't post anything that time as either the email went through eventually or my husband re-sent it later. (If it was a few years ago it might have been!)

If you're wondering, I get to see anything he sends these friends on our joint address (and vice versa) as we've got Mail set up on both our computers to BCC that sending address.

Re: Plusnet mail server blacklisted

OK, but it was bigpond and senderscore/ReturnPath in that topic, anyway.
