Plusnet/POP/Thunderbird/Outlook2007 query - just curious

On Thunderbird (Mac) the POP username for PlusNet is 'user+name'.
On Outlook (PC) the username has to be just 'user' or it fails to work.
Why is this?
As I say, no problem, just curious, everything is working fine.

Re: Plusnet/POP/Thunderbird/Outlook query - just curious

Its Office 2007.
Only just set up Outlook on there - need it for work really. Took a while to figure out what was 'wrong'... or right.

Re: Plusnet/POP/Thunderbird/Outlook query - just curious

Then something is definitely wrong as I have multiple different email addresses working in the format username+mailbox name
This is what mine looks like in Outlook 2003 and I doubt if 2007 is much different
I have hidden the username

Re: Plusnet/POP/Thunderbird/Outlook query - just curious

Hmm, that's funny, its actually working ok without the +
Guess I'll just leave it be!
Edit -
Well, just tried it again.
Definitely doesn't like the +

The two mailboxes you have that rely on using the '+' in the username both have different passwords to your main account. I suspect it's that which is causing you issues rather than the format of the username.

Re: Plusnet/POP/Thunderbird/Outlook2007 query - just curious

Without the + it goes to the default mailbox and uses the main account password. With the + it goes to the named mailbox and used the password set up via http://email.plus.net
Security wise it's probably better to always use the + option by only using named mailboxes.

Jim, on that screenshot. If you put "recent:" (without the quotes) before the bottom username then Outlook will download everything regardless of whether it's been read on the web or jot.
Let's be careful out there !

Re: Plusnet/POP/Thunderbird/Outlook2007 query - just curious

Please explain that as it shouldn't be possible to override all the individual mailboxes

Re: Plusnet/POP/Thunderbird/Outlook2007 query - just curious

@Bob, @ Jelv
Yes, I realised this later. I was in fact receiving mail from the default address...
So, need to figure out why Outlook2007 is not accepting the + address.
And the matter of passwords. It sent ok on one address and received ok on the other! Both have different passwords... This can't be right!
I'll try again this evening and post back.

Re: Plusnet/POP/Thunderbird/Outlook2007 query - just curious

Got it.
Bob was right.
Source of this conundrum was the 'show passwords' option on Thunderbird. There were two entries for the address in question -- I'd changed the password at some point and TB had remembered them both. I read off the old one and entered it into Outlook2007, thus the error.
The odd thing is that I managed to send an email yesterday with these wrong settings with no error. Where did it go?
I'll need to check if the person did actually receive this mail of not.
Anyway, all works now.
Thanks all for your help.   Smiley

Edit -- there's a lesson there for TB users, have an eye on that password list...

It went to wherever you sent it... Cheesy
This space can be confusing when you have multiple email boxes.  If for example you have...
username
username+mail2
username+mail3
username+mail4
Each must use its OWN name and password for the INBOUND server, but for the OUTBOUND server, each could use the credentials of any of the others in place of its own.  In other words, all mail boxes could use username / password for the OUTBOUND configuration.

Ah! Thanks for that  Smiley  Bit of a relief actually - it was a fairly important mail.
Not sure what might have happened if he confirmed receiving it at the time - I didn't get a reply. But at least he got the info.
