Password forgotten

On reading a couple of topics I got to wondering about this scenario.
You have an online service which you use infrequently with a username and password.
The name of your account (username) is your email address.
You have forgotten your account password.
You click on 'Forgotten Password' and an email is sent to you with instructions for changing your password.
Unfortunately you migrated your broadband 6 months ago and lost the use of the registered email address so you don't receive the password reset email.
The email address is your account name and cannot be changed without creating a new account.
What would be the solution?

Well setting aside the fact that you've forgotten your password, the organisation concerned needs to review their business processes.  Using an email address as an account identifier shows a clear lack of real world thinking.  In this throw-a-way society, businesses need to recognise that these days people change their ISP (and therefore their email addresses) as frequently as people change their mobile phone providers and hence their phone numbers.  This is in part equally due to the behaviour of those suppliers as it is to the users.  Some suppliers make it difficult to migrate phone numbers and many users just do not know that its possible.
Which brings me around to answering the OP's question - though a longer term strategy, get a domain name and use email@mydomain.me.uk - when you then swap ISPs make sure they can host the domain name for you... or if that's too much of a technical challenge, get a @gmail.com email account.
