New iPhone - will not send Emails but will recieve

I don't come here often but this time I am stuck.
I have just got a new iphone from Tesco mobile (which uses O2 network).
I can recieve emails fine but I cannot send them. I have gone through the setup guides, searched the forum (I am not on the 3 network) but can't find a solution.
I get an error message every time "The user name or password for SMTP usermame+mailbox name@relay.plus.net is incorrect."
I have double checked the settings several times and I can't get it to work - anyone else been able to solve this?
The iphone defaulted to a port other than port 25 for the SMTP server ( I can't remeber what it was) is port 25 the right one?

Authenticated SMTP uses your portal login details (i.e. for your default mailbox) not username+mailboxname.

Found the Solution.....
Under the SMTP settings it says user name and password are optional - no they are not! Leave them blank and everything works.

It can use either - it was something that was added I think in response to the very vocal protests about having to give the main account password to other people using mailboxes on the account.

If you're connecting via our network then you don't need a username/password to send. If you're not though then you will (unless the phone/Internet provider you're connecting to automatically intercepts and delivers email on port 25, which is unlikely).

Thank you that is very helpful. That would also explain why I can't send emails from my laptop when away from home.

Re: New iPhone - will not send Emails but will recieve

Is there an alterative port number we can use other than 25 because 3 mobile blocks that port.

Not at the moment - you have to send using the 3 servers.

They don't seem to work when I tried them. I kept getting an eror back saying athentication not accepted on this server. Surely with all the mobile divices being used provision should be made for people using them to send mail.

Re: New iPhone - will not send Emails but will recieve

the only way to send e-mail with your user name on the three network is to use webmail, they will only let you use a three mail name on there server

Re: New iPhone - will not send Emails but will recieve

Wrong! This has been discussed many, many times on these forums.
If your outgoing email is not a three email address you have to use the server smtp-mbb.three.co.uk

Re: New iPhone - will not send Emails but will recieve

What's wrong with your statement? Nothing apart from it being totally incorrect!
You can send email via the three nretwork with your plusnet address as the sender providing you use the correct server. You don't have to use webmail.

Re: New iPhone - will not send Emails but will recieve

The problem with using 3's servers is you have to keep swapping back to PlusNet is you switch to Wi Fi. A lot of ISP also have port 26 which can't be to hard to implement.
