Maximum size email attachment

What's the max size for this now? I thought it was around 100Mb.
Just tried twice to send an attachment which is 43Mb in size and I'm getting it bounced back like this...

A message that you sent to the following recipient could not be delivered due to a permanent error. username@gmail.com 552:5.2.3 our size guidelines. l27si16878175weq.25 This message was created automatically by mail delivery software on the server. avasout06.plus.net
Same thing happens for a Yahoo address and another Plusnet one.

Re: Maximum size email attachment

I tried to send a lot of photos on Wednesday, it bombed out, had to split it to lust under 30M before it would send.

Mind you the recipient has not said they got them yet, their only number I have is their works number

Re: Maximum size email attachment

Looks like a server problem...  I had this about a month ago and Bob Pullen sorted it.
I see that he's just clocked in..  any chance of working some magic again Bob (or Jojo, or anyone)?

I also had the same issue about a month ago, but it corrected itself (or maybe it was Bob  Wink

Re: Maximum size email attachment

Well the size limit is still set to 100Mb on the servers:
$ telnet relay.plus.net 25
Trying 212.159.8.107...
Connected to relay.plus.net.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 avasout08 smtp relay.plus.net
ehlo cloudmark
250-avasout08 hello [84.93.217.165], pleased to meet you
250-HELP
250-AUTH LOGIN PLAIN
250-SIZE 104857600 <--- You need to make an exception for overheads though!
250-PIPELINING
250-8BITMIME
250 OK

Just sent a 50Mb file to an external address via our relay servers and it turned up OK.

Re: Maximum size email attachment

Don't forget attachments have to be MIME encoded so 100MB message size limit means a maximum unencoded attachment of around 85MB.

See pic attached.  However, I CAN send the same file to myself without any problems. File size is 43.4 MB (45,598,314 bytes)

Re: Maximum size email attachment

I've just sent a test email with an attachment of 54MB (encoded message size 74MB) to two recipients, one another mailbox on my Plusnet account, the second my gmail mailbox.
The Plusnet copy arrived at the correct mailbox, the gmail copy was bounced.
Conclusion: It's a limit on gmail, not Plusnet.
Looking at the bounce message it has an attachment ForwardedMessage.eml which is just under 10MB, which suggests that gmail don't accept anything with an attachment over 10MB unless they return just the first 10MB.

Re: Maximum size email attachment

But isn't "server.avasout06" on the Plusnet system? How can a gmail server cause a PN error message to be generated by PN delivery software?

http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=8770
I think the confusion here is the format of the bounce message:
Quote
A message that you sent to the following recipient could not be delivered due to a permanent error. xxx@gmail.com 552:5.2.3 our size guidelines. q58si9152567wec.131 This message was created automatically by mail delivery software on the server. avasout03

If it was formatted as:
Quote
A message that you sent to the following recipient could not be delivered due to a permanent error. The remote server responded:
xxx@gmail.com 552:5.2.3 our size guidelines. q58si9152567wec.131
This message was created automatically by mail delivery software on the server. avasout03

it would remove the confusion.

Re: Maximum size email attachment

Heads up that the rejection message has now been changed to:
Quote
A message that you sent to the following recipient could not be delivered due to a permanent error. The remote server <server_address> responded with:
xxx@gmail.com 552:5.2.3 our size guidelines. q58si9152567wec.131
This message was created automatically by mail delivery software on the server avasout01.

Thanks for the suggestion jelv.
