Mail Forwarding

Hi all.
I have changed my broadband provider to Plusnet,
effective in a couple of weeks.
My domain is currently, "mydomain.isp.co.uk"
I have registeried my own domain with 123-reg as the above, with
the dot removed after "mydomain", leaving "mydomainisp.co.uk".
This allows me to inform email correspondents to just
remove that dot from my email address.
This means email will be addressed to me at my new domain
as xxx@mydomain.co.uk
I hope that makes sense.
I would like mail to be forwarded to me via Plusnet.
Can you please tell me if and how I can achieve this, and will I
be able to reply from xxx@mydomain.co.uk?
Thanks,
John.

The simplest way is to use 123-reg's email forwarding service (assuming they have one?). You can configure that to forward messages to your Plusnet email address. When sending emails from your Plusnet account, you would simply specify mydomain.co.uk as the sender address.
The alternative is more complex and involves you transferring ownership or the domain to Plusnet and hosting it there (costs £1/month). Email addressed to the mydomain.co.uk address would then get delivered directly to your Plusnet mailbox.

123-reg do provide mail forwarding. It's very straightforward to configure from the online control panel.
Mail will arrive at your chosen Plusnet address still addressed To xxx@mydomain.co.uk but with the envelope rewritten to the Plusnet address.
Depending on which mail client you use, you can normally set up rules to sort the incoming mail into different folders based on the To address.

Re: Mail Forwarding

Thanks Bob and Wisty.
That's exactly what I was hoping to hear.
I'm not sure when I'll need to do this, as today's Plusnet email
tells me my line will be transferred on 23/2/2016,
and one from BT says," Another service provider has told us you
want to move your phone line over to them on 15-Feb-2016".
I'm assuming that it's just "paperwork".
Thanks again.

Not if my experience is anything to go by - and I was moving broadband from PlusNet (ADSL) to PlusNet (FTTC)!!
In my case because the phone line transferred, as yours seems to be doing, and because Openreach can only cope with one order at a time on a phone line, the phone had to transfer, then PlusNet could place the order for Fibre - so there was a significant delay.
It's possible that your phone will transfer to Plusnet on the 15th (as identified by BT), but that your order for broadband will not happen until the 23rd. Hopefully your existing Broadband will continue to work between the 15th and the 23rd. Mine did, but I was already with PlusNet for ADSL.
On the forwarding issue, if you already have the domain registered, you could start experimenting now. Forward  xxx@mydomain.co.uk to your existing mailbox with your current ISP. Then you can test it. It's simple to then change the redirection via the 123-reg control panel once you go live with PlusNet.
An alternative would be to set up a free account somewhere (Hotmail, Gmail, Outlook.com) and forward your new domain mail to that. Then there is limited risk of loosing any mail sent to the new domain when the switch to PlusNet happens.

Re: Mail Forwarding

I'm not entirely sure why BT are advising the 15th, as both our orders (Phone and Fibre) are committed for 23/02/16 and have been since roughly 5:30am this morning Huh

Re: Mail Forwarding

I've just read this from my current ISP,
"Proposed switchover date to release the numbers to your new service
provider is 15/02/2016", so my current providers agree with each other,
but not with Plusnet.
I have a vague memory of there being a possible date of the 15th
after I completed the sign-up, but before the email confirmation.
Could be mistaken though.
Would there be a reason that Plusnet can't fall in line with them?
Wisty, thanks for the suggestion, I'll try some tests with my Hotmail
and Gmail accounts.
Thanks.

Re: Mail Forwarding

I believe the minimum lead time for the order would have been the 15th and this is what it was initially placed for. However when the order went committed, it was for the 23rd. This will be due to engineer resourcing and the order automatically matching up on the dates.
I'm sorry to say it's not a case of us matching up with the date given to you by your current provider. The migration process is gaining provider lead, so they should match up with the date our order went committed for and our suppliers have given us the 23rd as the earliest available date to complete your order by. It may be worth giving your current provider a call to find out why they're advising the 15th, despite our orders committing for the 23rd and making sure they're not planning on ceasing you early.

Re: Mail Forwarding

Hi Harry.
That's what I thought was the case regarding the 15th.
I've just had an automated call from BT, the relevant part being,
" if you have any questions regarding the change-over, call us by the 19th".
They've sent me a letter, should arrive tomorrow.
This suggests that BT are in line with Plusnet, re the 23rd.
I'll call my ISP immediately, as you suggest, since they're the ones who
appear to be out of sync now.
Thanks.

Re: Mail Forwarding

The 19th would make sense as this would be 2 working days notice prior to the committed completion date.
Judging from that they're in sync, but maybe their comms to you are just delayed.

Re: Mail Forwarding

I've spoken to my ISP, and they're now in sync, assuming the note the help
guy posted on my account has the desired effect.
He said that Plusnet had requested the 15th yesterday, but now hopefully all
will go well on the 23rd.
Thanks.
