Is there any SSL encryption or TLS authentication available especially for IMAP?

I've seen this reply in the forums and got basic IMAP working in Thunderbird 3 (Hello John can you here me it's Virgil...)
But why do I have to send my password over the internet in plain text for PlusNet mail? I got SSL and TLS on other accounts but not here and my PN mail is my "home" account which I use most.
