IMAP quota reporting & uplift of the 1GB limit

Could PlusNet increase the size of the mailbox & enable quota reporting?
Yes, the 1GB limit is on the FAQ: http://www.plus.net/support/email/common_questions.shtml#storageLimit ; And it's also in the emails PN periodically send me because my family's four accounts are all IMAP'd.  But we have two PCs, a laptop, several mobiles, and like being able to use them all, as well as webmail.  My kids can now chomp through 60GB of bandwidth a month, but the mailbox size limit we all share appears unchanged for a half-decade.
Back in 2003 there was an AUP that limited unread emails to 25MB: http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,12238.0.html - which appears quaint these days. But so's the 1GB limit which seems to date from around 2007: http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,2784.0.html/
Left to their own devices mail boxes do just grow, but these isn't even an easy way of keeping tabs as PN seem to have inhibited the quota mechanism so the Mozilla Thunderbird client, RoundCude webmail, and even IMAPsize http://www.broobles.com/imapsize/ can't pick it up (fails with "Can't retrieve storage quota: GETQUOTAROOT Ok.") ... which is not really OK: http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,103477.msg880786.html#msg880786
I have now prunned, tweaked, & compacted the mailboxes down to something acceptable but would prefer a better solution from PlusNet. Maybe even one that includes SSL/TLS: http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,110879.0.html

Re: IMAP quota reporting & uplift of the 1GB limit

Hi,
I too got a usage limit exceeded email yesterday.  Similar to yourself, the whole family use IMAP email and are ill disciplined in keeping their mailboxes tidy.  One knows not what they are using and even if the quota mechanisms were working, one would need to access each person's mailbox to find out.
PN need to address quota reporting, at least in these notification emails.  I asked on a support ticket...
Rather than (or in addition to) all of the useful help information contained in the above ticket / email a statement of the file store usage of each of the mail boxes on the account would be more beneficial in enabling one to address the issue.
And received the response...
Thanks for getting back to us and we appreciate your suggestions, believe me when I say we have been looking for this functionality to be implemented for years, but apparently its a low request in the stack for development.
Seems to me that this needs to be raised up the development list for the benefit of both customers and PN's own staff.
As for increasing te 1G limit, I suggest that's not going to be likely given that we are allowed to create an unlimited number of mail boxes the real issue is managing the size of individual mail boxes, not an accounts total quota.
Cheers,
Kevin

Re: IMAP quota reporting & uplift of the 1GB limit

Kevin - I got a similar response on my ticket ... and an assumption that a PN person would pick this up ... nothing yet :-{
>As for increasing te 1G limit, I suggest that's not going to be likely given that we are allowed to create an unlimited number of mail boxes
Yes, but the 1GB quota applies to the total for all the mailboxes on the account - including all the family's account+username.  The limit hasn't been raised in over 5 years & you'd hope the mail servers were due an uplift by now.
> the real issue is managing the size of individual mail boxes...
Mozilla Thunderbird has the "Extra Folder Columns" plugin that gives totals within each mailbox & I used the IMAPSize program from Broobles to get info across all four user accounts.

But my Gmail account tells me how much of its 10GB allocation I'm using & also returns that as the Storage Quota value to IMAPSize. From the attached, it looks like PN intended to implement it on their webmail but then didn't.
