IMAP on GMail - synchronising existing sent items

I have just set up an account to access gmail via IMAP on Outlook Express.
It seems to be working OK in that the inbox synchronises OK but I can't get the Sent Items box to synchronise (it won't download the existing contents of the Sent Items Box to Outlook Express).
Googling hasn't thrown up an answer

Not sure about OE but in Thunderbird you check the Subscribed folders settings, you need to select what folders you see in IMAP, by default it only shows the Inbox.

The sent folder is shown as synchronise all messages as is the inbox

Try TB and see if it does the same, if it does then it is an issue on Gmail.

Done a bit more digging and it seems to be a problem with labels and folders in Gmail

I seem my sent mail fine in TB.
It appears under Google Mail/Sent Mail, my stuff sent from TB appears in Sent (I should really combine them, but ...)

That isn't the problem I am seeing
The email in the sent items box which were sent from webmail aren't copied into Outlook Express
