IMAP and POP3

Does anyone know if my ipad was set up with IMAP and my desktop and laptop set up with POP3 that these would not work correctly? I could not get my ipad to send mail but could receive this.

~~Is the iPad connected via WiFi to your Plusnet connection. If not did you set the username and password for sending?~~
