Gmail - Outlook - Windows Live Mail

Is it possible to set up Gmail in either Outlook or Windows Live Mail on PN?
I am presuming that I would have to use the PN outgoing server.

Re: Gmail - Outlook - Windows Live Mail

Shouldn't be a problem.
You need pop.gmail.com as the incoming server, on port 995, with SSL set as the security method.
You log in with your email address (whatever.that.is@gmail.com) and password.
Outgoing server is relay.plus.net, same as for your PlusNet email account.

Re: Gmail - Outlook - Windows Live Mail

If I remember correctly, you need to adjust your Gmail settings to allow PO3/IMAP mail collection before you can use an email client like Outlook or Windows live mail.

Thanks that is supporting what I have read. Although Google points you more towards imap.
Would be good if someone can confirm that they have it working with PN.

Re: Gmail - Outlook - Windows Live Mail

I have Gmail set up in Outlook on 2 different PC's, one is POP/SMTP (the main one) and the other IMAP.
It works fine using the settings recommended by Google (their servers only) and doesn't involve any PN servers, why would it?  Huh

Thanks all that gives me something to work with.
Most ISPs do not allow you to send out on any server but their own.

I think Google use encrypted ports which are not normally blocked.
Though I am on a static IP which may make a difference.

We don't do anything like that.

Re: Gmail - Outlook - Windows Live Mail

Log into gmail and there are simple set up instructions for using outlook. Look under Settings, Pop3 and IMAP for instructions.
No need to use any plus.net mail server whatsoever.

Re: Gmail - Outlook - Windows Live Mail

Eventually sorted.
Outlook 2007 would not work with this particular address, however another gmail one would.Started getting emails from Google about security of the app.
Tried Windows Live with same result.
In end used Thunderbird - set itself up imap, both servers gmail.

Outlook 2007 is what I use with Gmail, both POP and IMAP on different PCs.  Huh

It tends to be as much a matter of relay server owners not allowing 'off network' connections without 'local' account authentication.  That is you cannot connect to relay.plus.net:25 when not connected to the PlusNet network unless you use authentication with your PlusNet account details.

PlusNet has no bearing on this matter - they are simply a conduit for you to connect to your email provider's servers.

There is no reason to not use the email provider's own relay service.  If set up as suggested, there could be a need to change relay server details if one were not on the PlusNet network.  It is far tidier to use the relay service of the email provider, regardless of how one is connected to the internet.

I disagree, authentication alone is unlikely to work.  Most ISPs will block you from using Port 25 except with their own outgoing mail server.  But you should be able to use relay.plus.net on Port 587 (I think) if you use authentication with your PlusNet account details.

I disagree.  From home, I have never managed to connect to any other outgoing mail server on Port 25 than the one belonging to Plusnet - whatever Bob Pullen says.
Edit:  Turns out I wasn't trying hard enough and one of my two non-PlusNet email servers will work on Port 25.  Apologies to Bob Pullen.
