Getting ***SPAM*** In Subject on Some Emails Despite Option Being Turned Off

Over the last week or so I have been getting ***SPAM*** added to the Subject of some of my emails to my Plusnet email addresses despite the fact that under the "Would you like messages identified as spam to be tagged?" in Manage My Mail I have "Don't add [-SPAM-] to the subject line" very clearly selected and it has been that way for at least a year or two.
This suggests to me there is currently a fault on one of the Plusnet or Ironport email servers which is ignoring my setting in Manage My Mail and just adding ***SPAM*** to the subject regardless of my own personal settings.
I should therefore be most grateful if the source of this current defect in Plusnet's email server configuration could be identified and then remedied by the powers that be at Plusnet.
I list below an example of such an incorrectly tagged email:-

Re: Getting ***SPAM*** In Subject on Some Emails Despite Option Being Turned Off

To further clarify the above post the email messages being marked with ***SPAM*** in the Subject line are not messages that I personally consider to be spam but are bulk emails that I have opted to receive from various organisations that honour unsubscribe requests such as TomTom, Easyjet, Moneysavingexpert etc.  But if Plusnet considers that they are spam then the messages should be being placed in my SPAM folder and not in my Inbox.
But Plusnet is marking the messages as SPAM in the Subject but then placing them in my Inbox despite my Manage My Mail settings being clearly set to place Spam messages in my Spam folder.
So something is clearly very wrong somewhere.

Plusnet SPAM Subject marking:
Quote
Subject: [-SPAM-]

Your subject marking is *** SPAM ***, which would make me lean towards it being marked as spam before it even hits the Plusnet servers.

As Barry has suggested, we don't mark emails as **SPAM**, we mark them as [-SPAM-].

Yes I realise that now but from the header information can we also identify which mail server may be adding ***SPAM*** along the way to the Subject and surely the mail server shouldn't be doing this if the mail is not directed to one of its own email account holders since as we can see here spam marking policies vary considerably from one email provider to another.
These emails from Ryanair and TomTom etc are being marked as spam purely because they are bulk emailings but this hardly seems justified given that both Ryanair and TomTom honour unsubscribe requests and both of them only start sending emails in the first place to customers who sign up to receive them.
Surely it is highly unethical for a third party mail server that is merely a staging post to be altering the subject to ***SPAM*** in this way?

My guess is that the marking is added by Avast 5.0 on your own computer. This might be through a plug-in activated by your email client. I think it's worth checking if that applies.

I am using Avast 5.0 but its default settings for dealing with suspect email are only to add the phrases ***VIRUS*** and ***SUSPICIOUS*** to the subject of an email that is thought to contain a Virus or that is considered to be Suspicious.  There is no setting for Spam emails with the phrase ***SPAM*** and I have never yet had ***VIRUS*** or *** SUSPICIOUS*** added to the subject of an email in the three or four months since I moved from using Avast 4 and Avast 5 (presumably because Ironport has intercepted them all before they reached my Inbox).
Having said that Avast 5 has a fault where it keeps deactivating itself that I cannot find a solution for and that Avast 4 never had and they have also withdrawn the Free version of their program so I am considering taking my custom elsewhere in due course.

Re: Getting ***SPAM*** In Subject on Some Emails Despite Option Being Turned Off

Looking at pierre's headers one thing jumps out, on the *** SPAM *** message it has a header of
Quote
X-pn-pstn: Spam 1
, on the non-*** spam  *** message, it is missing.
My guess would be that whatever is adding that header, is altering the subject, perhaps a long forgotten anti-spam server somewhere that's not been switched off?
