Getting 552 error when forwarding an email.

Just posted this in a different forum, then realised it should have been posted here, but I can't figure out how to move the post.

I am getting a 552 error when trying to forward an email.

I am getting a 552 error when trying to forward an email.

552 g3j4jVtJfjUVQg3j6jpYck message rejected due to spam or virus. If you believe this is in error please login to your portal or contact your ISP support team.

I suspect that it is because there are a couple of references to a suspicious sounding link in the email. However, these links are NOT suspicious, it's just that the domain name used 'sounds' suspicious.

How can I get someone in Support to look into this for me and help resolve it?

I am aware that this is a previously known issue that has been previously resolved for individuals by Plusnet Support, as in this link:

Email 552 error - FIXED

Thanks,

Bill.

Re: I am getting a 552 error when trying to forward an email.

As I've not received any suggestions on how to resolve this issue which Plusnet Support have previously resolved for another customer (Email 552 error - FIXED), does anyone know if Plusnet has a list of URL's that they class as 'suspicious' and if that list may be viewable?

Thanks,

Bill.

Hi Bill,

This is not a 'fixed' error so reference to a fix elsewhere is not likely to be relevant.

To where are you forwarding the email?

Where did the email come from?

Can you share the URLs in question please?

As an update on this, the fingerprints have been adjusted so the emails should now be correctly delivered as desired.

Re: I am getting a 552 error when trying to forward an email.

Hi,

Sorry, but your response "This is not a 'fixed' error so reference to a fix elsewhere is not likely to be relevant." is confusing. The reference I have provided is to a thread of an almost identical issue that is flagged as 'Fixed', obviously the error I was reporting is not fixed, or I wouldn't have been asking for assistance.

Anyway, regardless of that, I have now resolved the problem myself by removing all of the 'suspicious' hyperlinks from the email I wanted to forward and as a result I have now successfully forwarded it.

For reference, the 'suspicious' links causing the problem all contain references to loveadmin.com, which contrary to what the name might sound like, is an Admin automation software provider and not a porn site. It seems that Plusnet block the forwarding of any emails containing valid links to this company's website. As this is an admin automation provider, they generate many links on behalf of their customers that contain references to their own site in order to fulfil admin tasks and hence the reason the links were in the email.

Bizarrely however, Plusnet actually allowed the receipt of the original email without issue and only blocks it with a 552 error if you try to forward or resend it. I am guessing that the inbound and outbound lists of dodgy websites are not in synch.

Thanks,

Bill.

Re: I am getting a 552 error when trying to forward an email.

Hi,

Sorry, but they are still failing to be delivered and with the same 552 error, unless I first remove the hyperlinks as per the details in my previous response a few minutes ago.

Thanks,

Bill.

Hi Bill,

"Sorry, but your response "This is not a 'fixed' error so reference to a fix elsewhere is not likely to be relevant." is confusing. Sorry if my phraseology confused.  The causes of 552 errors, from one case to another, are not the same, that is the cause is not static or to put it the way I did a 'fixed' error.  Therefor reference to a topic discussing a 552 event which states it is has been cured (fixed) is unlikely to have relevance to this instance of the error code.

So back to my original questions.

  • What are the URLs in question?
  • Where did the email come from (domain)?
  • Where are you forwarding it to (domain)?

Elsewhere we have seen emails containing specific URLs, which if sent individually do not cause issues, sent together they fail with 552 errors IF THE SENDER is Gmail.  That is under investigation elsewhere.

@168bill

My apologies, I posted my previous comment in the wrong thread. I've flagged yours to the team who look at these so that they can review the case further on your behalf.

Re: I am getting a 552 error when trying to forward an email.

As per my previous response, all of the URLs that I suspected to be the cause, contain the domain loveadmin.com and when these URLs are removed, the email can be forwarded by my Plusnet email account with no problem. If I once again try sending the original email, which still contains those URLs with that domain name, I once again get the same 552 error. And in this case, the sender is Plusnet NOT Gmail.

And as I also previously stated, the email was initially received without error to my Plusnet email account, with those same URLs in it.

So correct me if I'm wrong, but I deduce from those results that the domain being blocked by Plusnet on sending is loveadmin.com regardless of the fact that it is a perfectly legitimate domain, that Plusnet does not block on receiving.

Re: I am getting a 552 error when trying to forward an email.

I've had an update back on this, using the error you first provided g3j4jVtJfjUVQg3j6jpYck and it's matching the fingerprint of something that does look to be spam. We can get this reviewed further, as it's possibly a fingerprint clash, but to do so we'd need a full copy of the message in rfc822 format. Though they have advised that it's the message content, not specifically a URL that's causing the rejections in this case.

Re: I am getting a 552 error when trying to forward an email.

Thanks for the response, but I'm not sure I can export the original message in rfc822 format from my Outlook client. If I 'download' it to a .eml file from the Webmail client, the file looks readable in notepad, would this suffice?

If so, how can I forward it to yourselves without it being blocked with a 552 error?

Whilst they advise it's the message content that is the cause and not a URL, can they then explain why only removing the URLs actually fixes the problem?

Re: I am getting a 552 error when trying to forward an email.

Hi Bill,

"As per my previous response, all of the URLs that I suspected to be the cause, contain the domain loveadmin.com and when these URLs are removed"

I am trying to see if the issue is reproducible by sending an original email containing the identified URLs.  Is there a problem in providing the full URLs and all of them please?  Attempting to send an email containing just the bare domain name does not cause a problem.  I suspect that this is similar to a case investigated yesterday involving 3 URLs each of which did not give rise to any issues if sent individually, but did encounter issues if sent jointly from a Gmail account.

If I can reproduce the error, I can send the source to @JW

"I'm not sure I can export the original message in rfc822 format from my Outlook client."

Outlook 2016/19?

Open the sent item -> file -> properties -> copy the content of "Internet Headers" -> paste into notepad.

Send @JW a Private Message (PM) - click his name - select Send PM on the right - paste the content of notepad into the message body and send.

This will avoid any issues with the email service and keep the details of email addresses private for public view on the forum.

Re: I am getting a 552 error when trying to forward an email.

Spot on!

If I forward the email with just one of the URLs containing that domain name, it succeeds with no error.

As soon as I leave any 2 of the URLs containing that domain name in the email and try to forward it, it fails immediately with the same 552 error!

I have done as suggested, but I originally thought the 'Internet Headers' from Outlook wouldn't suffice as they don't include the message content with the URLs in. However I have pasted into a PM to @JW .

But in a separate PM I have also pasted in the entire email message (including URLs) from the download of the original email that I took from the Plusnet Webmail client, as that seems to better include all of the relevant detail in a simple txt format.
