Error message only when receiving an email directly from Plusnet

Using POSTBOX as my email client whenever I get an email directly from Plusnet I get this error message.

'An error occurred during a connection to comm.plus.net:443.

Cannot communicate securely with peer: no common encryption

algorithm(s).

(Error code: ssl_error_nocypher_overlap)'

I never see this message from any other email sender.  Anyone any ideas?  Thanks.

Re: Error message only when receiving an email directly from Plusnet

Plusnet don't support SSL for collecting mail. You need to disable encryption on the PlsuNet settings in your email client, this might help https://www.plus.net/help/email-guides/how-to-set-up-plusnet-email/

Ah! is that really

comm.plus.net:443

actually that looks like it's the outgoing SMTP settings. They're also trying to use ssl ( port 443 ).

They need to be relay.plus.net and port 587 , with ssl disabled.

Hope that helps

Re: Error message only when receiving an email directly from Plusnet

Apart from Plusnet this Postbox client also has a Hotmail account.  This account has to have SSL enabled to work.  Although I can't see why that should effect incoming Plusnet emails to the Plusnet account I've just deleted the Hotmail account just to see if that is causing the error message.

then where is the

'An error occurred during a connection to comm.plus.net:443.

 coming from ?.

Something seems to think it's connecting to comm.plus.net:443. The comm.plus.net sounds like an automatic mail account setup trying to guess an outgoing server name from the incoming account details

Re: Error message only when receiving an email directly from Plusnet

Port 443 is used for HTTPS connections to a web server, not email. The incoming mail server for Plusnet should be imap.plus.net port 143 with SSL.TLS off.

Re: Error message only when receiving an email directly from Plusnet

Thanks David.  In fact my incoming mail is POP not IMAP for various reasons.  I still find it strange that only emails coming directly from Plusnet themselves produces this error message.

Re: Error message only when receiving an email directly from Plusnet

I too have problems with PN marketing email through my Thunderbird POP connection - click to open them and I get a security-type warning (can't remember exactly what it is), but it totally locks up Thunderbird - I have to kill it via task-manager.

Reading the mail in web-mail is perfectly OK, so I'm guessing it is something at the BT end, as these marketing mails come through a BT, not PN, system.

I'll try and get a screenshot next time it happens.

In that case the incoming email server should be mail.plus.net on port 110. SSL/TLS should be off.

Re: Error message only when receiving an email directly from Plusnet

Sorry, my impression was that the error occurred during transmission rather than with the content of the message after receipt.

It is a bit odd including an HTTPS tracking pixel in an HTTP page.
