Re: Emails not showing up in inbox

I see the logic, but wouldn’t all the folders show up in webmail where there are no duplicate folders? Or have I made an assumption?🙄

Re: Emails not showing up in inbox

Just double checked in webmail no duplicate folders - one each of inbox, drafts, sent, junk & deleted; private folders all single also, & all folders with content now (re)compacted.

Tried sending an email with same results.

  • The only folders which show in any email client are the ones which are subscribed to
  • There is no such thing as a definitive sent / trash / draft folder - they are what they are by convention
  • Some clients are smart enough to recognise that there is an existing one of the above and use it
  • Others are not (notably winmail and its derivatives) and will create their own folder for the above

Re: Emails not showing up in inbox

Sorry, I suspect that I phrased my question poorly. What I meant to ask was would/should webmail show all folders on an account, regardless of who or what created them? By which I mean if I accessed the account through a client & created folders would these folders be displayed on webmail, or would webmail only see its own folders?
As a follow-up, if webmail can only see folders created by itself, how can I view all folders on the account to delete the ones not needed?

….Unless I use (yet) another client to see what folders are available for subscription then delete from there 🤔

Re: Emails not showing up in inbox

Ah!

Webmail will display the folders that the client has subscribed to.

Manage folders will show all folders and their subscription status.

The two unticked folders exist on the server but are not subscribed to and thus do not show in the MAIL view in webmail.

Re: Emails not showing up in inbox

In manage folders in webmail all folders ticked & included in the email Mb total given previously, all folders also fully expanded.

I’m starting to think about going full nuclear on this, & downloading all emails as .eml and/or transferring them to another IMAP account with a larger limit, deleting everything and seeing what then works.

Only problem with that is that I want full permission from the account holder before I do it 😰

@plusnettony

Recently we saw a case where the storage allowance on a legacy brand mail account was not what it was thought it should be following some maintenance on the component.  I will not claim to have understood the detail correctly ... but could there be something akin here?

Re: Emails not showing up in inbox

@Townman Definitely think that there could be something in this.

Had a discussion with the account holder earlier where I talked about what you and others had suggested about it being a mailbox quota matter. We had arranged for me to go over to set up an outlook account in a mail client in the hope that the emails could be transferred imap to imap to free up space. When I got there she'd been busy printing or deleting emails with a vengeance & had got the quota down below 80Mb, but still no new emails. More emails got deleted & moved, then finally a test email got through!

It was getting a bit late to go through each folder to assess the size of the mailbox, but I guesstimate that it was below 50Mb before it began working. With a few more deletions and some more transferring it seems likely that she can keep the account working.

I was also able to find out a bit more background about the account. They've had it since 1999 when their son set it up with three users. All was fine until the middle of February when all accounts stopped receiving emails. After some time one user, then another started getting messages through, but not the third & this is where I came in.

The question is what caused this? The account was working fine with over 100Mb of emails in the folders, then stopped and refused to work until it was reduced to well below 50Mb, and this seemed to coincide(ish) with the madasafish problem three weeks ago so I've been wondering if the two events are connected? I'm assuming that some maintenance and resetting was carried out on the servers, and if it was possible that during this the size allowance was reset to a lower limit? Is this even possible, and is there any way of finding out?

TLDR version: emails deleted, inbox pruned drastically, emails now arriving, friend happy.

Thanks for all the help.

Re: Emails not showing up in inbox

The resolution of the recent MAAF issues will not have caused an issue such as this. There was one specific case raised around here which had its own oddity - it is a clutch at straw asking if there is a similarity here.

The disclosure that there are others “on the account” raises questions beyond my knowledge… which others might be able to answer …

1. Do these legacy services permit multiple mailboxes on the account?

2. Does the 250MB storage allowance apply to the account or per mailbox?

The Plusnet and Force9 mail services provide 1GB per ACCOUNT which is shared across all mailboxes on the account.

If it is similar for the legacy products as being discussed here … then the issue might not be the mailbox you’ve been looking at, it’s the other two which are utilising the space.

Re: Emails not showing up in inbox

Well your first sentence got rid of one of my straws. 😀

AIUI now it was a domain that was created in 1999, with three members. Each having their own webmail login with their own folder structure, I obviously have no idea what limits/quotas were imposed then or are imposed now. I was taking as a worse case scenario that the 250Mb limit applies across all three mailboxes, based on the one I was primarily looking at having a content less than half that. I did manage to get access to the other mailboxes, but as they both had minimal contents & were receiving messages I concentrated on the one that wasn’t so my absolute knowledge of the other accounts is limited.

My question about events being linked to the MAFF problem was purely based on idle wonderment as to what caused something that was working to stop then partially restart, it’s a niggle 🙄 as what made this mailbox different?

The question is “is it worth pursuing?” The immediate problem has been solved - emails are now arriving - with the cumulative assistance of members of this forum, so for me it’s academic interest at this point, I just like knowing why… but that’s me I guess.

Re: Emails not showing up in inbox

@dave / @plusnettony / @Marsh / @LexLex2020

Can some please review this topic please?

  1. For the legacy email services, is the often quoted 250MB storage quota per mailbox or shared across all mailboxes on the account similar to the policy on Plusnet and Force9 in reference to the 1GB allowance
  2. Is there anything awry with this account's quota allocation as seen recently here - https://community.plus.net/t5/Everything-else/freenetname-domain-mail-not-being-routed/m-p/2000909#M...

"For the legacy email services, is the often quoted 250MB storage quota per mailbox or shared across all mailboxes on the account similar to the policy on Plusnet and Force9 in reference to the 1GB allowance"

Depending on the email brand capacity differs I have an image below will all brand capacity's.

Re: Emails not showing up in inbox

"If the customer has a domain, they get two additional mailboxes, each with a 100Mb limit"

Now, if the mailbox in question is one of the additional ones, that would explain what seems to be happening...
