Emails not downloading to iPhone or iPad

I use an iMac, iPad and iPhone all of which have ben working perfectly for several years using POP3.

About 10 days ago I needed to change my password.  I changed it in my iMac settings and it auto configured without problem. My iPhone strangely continued working without me changing the password (stopped today though) but my iPad won't download anything even with the password change.

Well that's not strictly true as I seem to have two usernames one for a broadband account and one just for an email account.  I think I was given this to keep a legacy email name when they gave me a new broadband account.  So if I use my PlusNet broadband user name I receive emails only from PlusNet.  If I enter my other user name (which has worked for years) I receive nothing.

PlusNet support tell me it's not their problem as it's a mail client issue.  I dont think it is.  I've never been unable to solve this type of problem before.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Re: Emails not downloading to iPhone or iPad

It most probably is an email client issue. Whatever POP3 is not suitable for multiple client access to the same mailbox - you should use IMAP if that’s what you want to do.

Which email brands are involved here? Are you accessing the mail whilst connected to Plusnet provided broadband.

Re: Emails not downloading to iPhone or iPad

Hi Townman

Thanks for your reply.  The POP3 has worked flawlessly for more years than I care to remember but I understand what you are saying.

I don't think that IMAP is the answer.

This only relates to one plusnet email address which I've owned for nearly 20 years.  I have been a Plusnet customer for so long that they were unable to transfer over my old account to their new accounts system and so they had to vary my username slightly from xxxxxxxxxxx to xxxxxxxxxx100.  To enable me to continue using the email without the 100 PlusNet created me a separate email account.

So now I have a broadband account and an Email account.  I'm pretty sure that it's the email account which is causing me the problem.  I can't access it.  If I use webmail to login to the xxxxxxxxxx100 account all I see are emails from Plusnet.  None of my other emails.

If I login to my broadband account and go to emial settings I just see the xxxxxxxxxx100 account.

Somewhere recently the separate email account has lost its connection and no longer points to my xxxxxxxxxx account.

Unless I'm being utterly dense I can't see how this can be a mail client issue at my end.

But, of course, this doesn't explain why emails to xxxxxxxxxx AND xxxxxxxxxx100 accounts are still coming in on my iMac.

As ever, grateful for your insight.

Re: Emails not downloading to iPhone or iPad

Email accounts are quite distinct even if appearing to be similar. You’ve not mentioned the brand. Also it would help to know how you are logging on - email addresses or account name.

For some brands there have been some changes ready for the migration. In some cases that has tightened up on incorrect client side settings.

As for IMAP vs POP3 across the brands, there are some significant differences.

@robparker

As well as client settings parameters being tightened up, if when you changed the password on your Mac the client defaulted to the common POP3 setting of ‘delete emails from server on download’ then there is nothing left for the other devices to access.
Can you access the emails on the iPad using web access?

Re: Emails not downloading to iPhone or iPad

On my iMac the server settings for the POP3 are set to delete from the server after one day so any emails should be available to download to the iPad and iPhone.

I can use my iPad to access webmail but I only see emails from my broadband account (Plusnet emails) but I have no idea how to access the mailbox on the additional email account which picks up all my regular emails.

Re: Emails not downloading to iPhone or iPad

This is regular Plusnet branded email.  On my iMac I log in with my email address.  This is obviously looking at BOTH my broadband account xxxxxxxxxx100 and the extra email account xxxxxxxxxxx

Up to now I've logged in with my user name on the iPad and iPhone.  I've tried using the email address same as the iMac but it brings up an error.

I'm pretty sure that it's the separate Plusnet Email account which is causing me the problems on the mobile devices.

Re: Emails not downloading to iPhone or iPad

There have been no changes to the plus.com address space. Those accounts will logon using either email address or account name.

Re: Emails not downloading to iPhone or iPad

Thanks for your help.  I suspect it's to do with the migration to Greenby which PlusNet have kept quiet about.  I only found out from a link they sent me.

I'll get back to them.

Re: Emails not downloading to iPhone or iPad

In the case of the main Plusnet brand definitely not. There have been no changes made.

Plusnet have not exactly been quite about this. There is a general notice of the intention to migrate which states when brands are migrated those cohorts will be advised. If you’ve not been advised, then you are not currently in the change space.
