Email questions, also fails to send

I have A couple of questions re security...
1) is email via wireless away from e home secure with plusnet?  In a cafe, for example, am I at risk of divulging username and password by receiving email  through wifi?
2) what about if I was away from home but used the 3G connection?
...and a couple re trying to send emails:
3) away from home, on wifi, I can receive but not send emails.  I have the relay.plus.net smtp server set up correctly according to all thte guides but it fails to send.  It seems some people get this to work but I've no idea how: is this just a case of c'est la vie with Plusnet?
4) am I stuck with web mail to send via wifi?
Away from home on 3G I can use 3 smtp server to send successfully.

1) No it is not secure with PlusNet.
2) your own 3G connection is better than using WIFI in a Coffee Bar.
3) Your incoming mail is from PlusNet your outgoing mail is 3G.
4) Webmail is the safest option for wen you are away from home.

Thanks for that:
1) broken and crap.
2) 3 smtp server also doesn't use SSL.
3) I probably won't bother now given (1) but I can't get it to work on wifi at all.  I can on 3 but this was about wifi mail send: why won't it work?  My girlfriend uses gmail without problem...
4). Guess I'll stick with web mail.  Or perhaps switch to gmail which does work with the mail app on my iPad.  Mail app is convenient but web mail not so much. 
Actually, why can't Plusnet just sort this out?  Rhetorical question.....
Oh well.

...and the problem with webmail is it doesn't have access to my address book.
Rubbish, just really rubbish - I just don't think there's an excuse for it these days.

WIFI will work in a Coffee Bar But it is Not secure
As for Gmail are you nuts Google scrape all the contents of your incoming and outgoing mail.

As for your address book just set up what you need on webmail.
