Email accounts/addresses deleted without requesting it, due perhaps to account being hacked

Has anyone encounterd a situation like this?

My mother and father, which have been with PN since the days of Force 9, suddenly found last Friday that their email client was giving bad password errors when MS Outlook and webmail.plus.net tried to read their mailboxes. Emails to their addresses bounce with "account no longer exists" type errors.

When I investigated (they have me listed as an additional user for contacting PN support) it seems that PN received a closure request on Thursday or Friday last week and acted on it immediately without checking. PN support said that there was no way to resurrect the addresses, which is a major blow since their addresses are used by a large number of website users around the world who may not think to check the website for an "our address had changed" instruction when their email had bounced.

Something catastrophic seems to have gone wrong with PN's due-diligence checking that a major change like deletion of email addresses is genuine. Minor changes such as contact phone/email generate emails fine to say "We've made this change. If this is incorrect, contact support on this phone number". But a major change has slipped through the net.

I can supply specific details by private message if PN themselves get involved. I've also raised a ticket 235817616 which PN are currently processing.

Re: Email accounts/addresses deleted without requesting it, due perhaps to account being hacked

One detail I forgot to mention. Their user account for emails is different to their user account for broadband. This dates from when they upgraded from ADSL to fibre 5 or more years ago, and PN were unable (apparently) to upgrade their old account. Consequently they created a new account for fibre broadband and left the old account in place for emails and web space. It is the old account that has been marked as "Account closing" when I log onto it on portal.plus.net.

Re: Email accounts/addresses deleted without requesting it, due perhaps to account being hacked

I've just heard from my mum. My dad (who was listed as the mobile phone contact) received a text on 27 Jul saying (I'm paraphrasing) "We're sorry that you are closing your account. The change will be processed on 27 July. If you change your mind contact the PN support number". Sending a confirmation for a request on the same day that it is actioned is a bit late if you spot that the closure is a hoax and need to get it reversed".

Something very bad has gone wrong with PN's processes, if a closure request is actioned the same day it is received, without sufficient time to countermand it. And who the <expletive> has sent the closure request? Certainly not my parents or me.

It doesn't help that my dad suffers from dementia and probably wouldn't have seen/understood the text. We changed the contact details for the broadband account but evidently didn't do the older email/webspace account.
