Deleting email messages

This is probably very simple but how do I delete an email without first opening it?

first welcome to the forum
you just hightlight the e-mail and then click delete

Problem is when I highlight the email it opens. Under the old system I could check a box and simply delete.

Assuming you are talking about the new webmail this is what I get when I right click on a mail
The other possibility is that you are seeing it in the preview pane.
This can be stopped by going to Preferences, Mailbox View and unticking Show Preview Pane alternatively you can untick it here - second picture
