Is is possible to create a new email address that ends @plus.com or something equally as short ? I would prefer not to have my user name shown at the end.

This is not possible for Plusnet email, you could use Google gmail, Microsoft live or any of the other 'free' email services available or you could buy a domain name with email hosting.

No. All Plusnet's email addresses are in the format of yourchosenname@username.plus.com. You are also unable to change your username once the account has been set up.
If you do not want your username to be included then your best option is to use another email provider (Gmail. Hotmail etc) or purchase your own Domain name.

For info I used to use names.co.uk but found they were blocking some emails - such as ones from my bank - without any apparent way of letting them through. I switched all mine to www.123-reg.co.uk and although I've had a few problems with them they've been sorted and they're cheap - though not as cheap as once-upon-a-time.
My shortest email address is in the form of *@***.org.uk

I have *@***.me.uk

I second the use of 123reg.
Email forwarding to your PlusNet boxes is a cinch. I have been using them since... well, can't remember but a long time.
I have 5 addresses with them 4 of which have their Name Servers pointing to PlusNet for hosting but billing still with 123reg.
