Change PTR record, home unlimited fibre

Hi all,
I’ve been with Plusnet a few months now. Barring a few installation problems, I’ve been very happy with the reliable service provided.
I’ve also been pleased to find that Plusnet doesn’t block SMTP on port 25 like some ISPs apparently do, and that switching to a static IP address is quick, easy and reasonably priced.
Kudos!
The one thing I can’t find in the control panel is a way to change my PTR record. I’m currently running a mail server at home (personal use only, not an open relay, etc!), and have configured all of the other records correctly, but AFAIK the PTR record is controlled by your ISP, not your DNR.
I have searched for this online, but I only found one thread about it and it was related to business broadband.
Is it possible to change the PR record with Plusnet Unlimited Fibre home broadband?
Many thanks,
Feathers McGraw

Re: Change PTR record, home unlimited fibre

Hi there!
We can indeed set that up for you, assuming the domain in question is hosted with us.
All you'd need to do is set up a forwarding A record (can be done via domain names on our member centre). After that we'd just need you to raise a ticket to request the PTR record for the reverse lookup.

Re: Change PTR record, home unlimited fibre

Are you talking about your PTR record or the reverse DNS lookup ?

Re: Change PTR record, home unlimited fibre

Hi, thanks for the replies both of you.
The domain isn't directly hosted by PlusNet... it's running on a RasPi. So in a way, I guess it is hosted by PlusNet Wink . If you meant DNS hosting, that'll be namecheap.
@ picbits, isn't a PTR record what provides the results of a reverse DNS lookup? I spent ages searching/browsing the site for PTR record but nothing came up... I have since found pages on "rDNS", though.

Re: Change PTR record, home unlimited fibre

I always get confuddled by PTR / rDNS and various other stuff lol.
I know if I rDNS my IP, I get picbits.plus.com
I should really ask Plusnet to change it to my FQDN but ...... the amount of hacking attempts I get against my email server are phenomenal and by having the above rDNS they don't even get past the first hurdle of guessing my domain name in the majority of attacks.
Some examples - this "hacker" can't even work out what my domain is .....
Dec 17 12:39:23 pbhpx postfix/smtpd[15034]: disconnect from unknown[202.129.38.6]
Dec 17 12:39:23 pbhpx pop3d: Connection, ip=[::ffff:202.129.38.6]

Dec 17 12:39:29 pbhpx postfix/smtpd[15094]: lost connection after UNKNOWN from unknown[202.129.38.6]

and the advantage of having a .plus.com rDNS instead of my own domain .....

I'm upgrading servers soon so will put in a bit more of a defence on the new server but if you want your rDNS changing, just give PN a yell Smiley

Re: Change PTR record, home unlimited fibre

I asked then yesterday, and by today the changes had taken effect Smiley
I'm really pleased.
What kind of mail server are you using? If your MTA is Postfix try adding some helo access restrictions, they seem to block 95% of spam for me.

Re: Change PTR record, home unlimited fibre

I'm using Postfix on the old mail server but will have to have a proper play when I set up the new server.
Too many things to do and too little time !
