Cannot connect to mail.plus.net (POP) from PC outlook 2010

This was working until this evening. Get error "Log onto incoming mail server (POP3): The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). The server responded: -ERR Cannot connect to POP server 212.159.9.86 (212.159.9.86:100), connect error 10060 Called plusnet who told me its an issue on my outlook. The support person asked me to check webmail works but I am not sure why that is connected. If I change my outlook mailbox to use IMAP instead of POP, outlook receives incoming mail. Plusnet support are now closed, and I cannot find a method for logging an online web call to support. I cannot ping the server above nor can I telnet to it on port 110 (IMAP works fine). I definitely think their POP server or F5 address has failed but can't get plusnet to fix it. Anybody have the same problem and is there a plusnet engineer on this forum who maybe able to help.

for info I'm intermittently having similar issues on mail on my Macbook this evening, looks like it could be a wider issue (and based on the number of people that have viewed this thread)

Same problem here in Manchester ... can't ping and running a tracert indicates broken path, see below ....

Also tried ping and tracert connecting via office VPN through zen ... different path via zen network but still no connection.
Nothing showing about this in the PN service status yet.

Seeing 2 other messages in this forum with the same issue suggests there was a problem with pop gateway.
I think plusnet should hire better technical support staff as not sure why I was even told to check webmail when I clearly stated I was not able to ping their pop gateway yet could ping Gmail and was receiving Gmail emails to the same outlook.

Exactly the same here. Tried Pinging:
PING 212.159.8.81 (212.159.8.81) 56(84) bytes of data.

There is definitely a problem with the Plusnet mail servers. My Mailwasher program had connection problems from around 1830 last night, was OK at 0230 this morning, had more problems just before 0800, then responded 10 minutes later.

@leo5, what email client/program are you using?
Are you able to temporarily change your incoming server address from 'mail.plus.net' to '212.159.8.81' and let me know if it makes any difference?

@bobpullen -I don't think it's fully fixed yet - Mailwasher seems to be reporting failures on alternate 10 minute polls.

Sorry to interrupt, have the same problem. Using Thunderbird and have changed two machines from 'mail.plus.net' to '212.159.8.81' and both downloaded mail.

Changed server address to 212.159.8.81 and seems to work ok in Live Mail

Thanks for the clarification.
The host name for Plusnet POP3 collection (mail.plus.net) resolves to two IP addresses 212.159.8.81 and 212.159.9.81, each of which routes to a separate location. Seems there are issues with the latter, but not the former.
The intermittent nature of the problem will be because you sometimes hit the 'broken IP', and sometimes the working one.
We're working on it. Sorry to those of you that have been inconvenienced.
