Well I've now had two of my friends look at it, one who designs machine learning systems and one who works in second line IT support who even tried to set my email up on his machine as a trial and still could not send mail after spending an hour on mine via TeamViewer and failing to get anywhere. Both have failed to get anything to work and are of the opinion that this is related to the move to Greenby and insoluble from my end. I guess that I'll just have to get a new email address.

Lets clarify every detail...

  • It is a FORCE9 mailbox
  • It is NOT the default mailbox
  • It is NOT an email address of joe.blogs format (that is it is joeblogs)

With the above being correct, regardless of being on or off Plusnet's network, you should be able to authenticate as follows...

  • SMTP server - relay.force9.net port 587 STARTTLS
  • Username accountname+joeblogs
  • Password - whatever

Can you log on to the account using webmail (user accountname+joeblogs) then read and send email?

If the email address is joe.blogs@ and you are connecting from OFF the network, then you might well indeed encounter issues.  I am awaiting an update from the business on this.

Yes, I can log in via webmail and both send and receive emails fine. With the suggested settings I can't send emails using outlook, Mac mail or android gmail.

My primary email is username@username.f9.co.uk. Nothing but letters, no bits of punctuation on the LHS of the @

Hmmm, I wonder ... if you are using the DEFALUT email address as above (not a secondary) then the userID is simply username

I think it has been advised, if it is the DEFAULT mailbox then the email address can be used to authenticate.  Fixes for secondary mailboxes are WIP.

That's what the original setting was. User ID was username. It was set to that when it stopped working. It's still not working with user ID as username. Primary email is username@username.f9.co.uk. Neither work as user id either on the operating systems for Mac, Windows, Android and iPad/iPhone.

Can you log onto the mail box using webmail?

Yes. I've been using webmail since the start of the problem logging in with my username and password without difficulty.

Can you assist here please?  All that is understood around the current issue dose not seem to be helping here.

I've read through the thread numerous times and can't see anything that's been missed.

 

As stated, use just the username rather than the full address. Host name supplied above (for incoming) ought to be changed to imap.plus.net . Anything in the outbox needs deleting for a fresh test after each change. 

A screen shot of the settings (with personal details blanked out) would be useful.

Just to close the thread, everything started working again last weekend without me doing anything. Thanks for everyone's help but it obviously was a problem at the other end rather than with my settings
