You are both suffering apparently identical issues - you might gain something from each other's experiences.

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

So,

Now mine main info@accountname appears to send and receive.

But,

the joe.blogs@accountname can not receive or send. It rejects the password

Great, that is both progress and clarity.

There is an issue under investigation, please use accountname+joe.blogs as the user name.

  • Secondary mailboxes will not authenticate with their email address
  • SMTP off network will not authenticate on a a.b email account

If you are off network, for an a.b email address you will need to use a different mailbox account for the outgoing server (not the same as the incoming server which is the usual practice).

can you clarify what your last statement actually means in layman's terms

I am trying to use a 1.b mailbox

what do i need to do

  • You are not connecting to the internet over a fixed Plusnet connection / WiFi service
  • SMTP will not authenticate using account+fred.bloggs
  • Therefore configure...
    • The INCOMING server (POP3 or IMAP) using account+fred.bloggs (that gets your email)
    • The OUTGOING server (SMTP) using one of
      • account
      • account+anothermailbox

That will work, but it might mean sharing the password for the account or another mailbox, which you might not want to do.  In that case create a new email address on your account - for example 'smptaccess' - with its own password.  Then for fred.bloggs sent the SMTP server to authenticate with account+smtpaccess

I am really sorry , but i still do not fully understand !

 

So say i want to send and recieve using an a.b type account.

Incoming mail setting are say

Account+a.b

Server mail.force.net Port 110

 

Outgoing mail settings

server relay.force9.net Port 25

 

Then do i tick the box that says 'My outgoing (SMTP) server requires authentication

 Then do I choose

'Use same settings as my incoming mail server

or

'Log on using name and password'

 

What would i need to do if i did not mind sharing the same password for example?

My outgoing settings are
SMTP
Username My username
Password xxx
Host name xx@username.f9.co.uk
Automatically manage connection settings ticked on mail.
Also tried
Account primary email address x@username.f9.co.uk
Username my username
Password xxx
Host relay.force9.net
Port 587 TLS/SSL used
Authentication Password
Neither work
For my Mac.

I've set up another SMTP server with the account name xxxx.f9.co.uk.
Now I get instead of password rejected
"Email address I've chosen" recipient rejected -relay denied. Running connection doctor this new one connection to server succeeded;login not required. I've still no idea what changed and what's actually going on as the settings worked without problems for decades.

Actually my fault .I tried using relay@plus.net to get that relay rejected message . Using relay@force9.net still gets the server response message of 5.7.0 Invalid login or password the same as every other attempt

I've changed my username to be "account+username" as you describe, but it's still not working. Given it's working over webmail this seems to be an authentication protocol change for email clients, could you advise what I should use?

I'm using relay.force9.net as my outgoing mail server as I've always done.

Tried using account (which I take to be my primary email address xxxx@xxxx.f9.co.uk+mailbox) and xxxx+mailbox. Still saying unable to verify account name or password
