Can't configure outgoing email server - Android / Ipad

Hi, I'm encountering some weirdness when trying to set up email on a new Android device. The background is that I was a PN customer, with PN email credentials from several years ago. I continued to use this PN email when I moved to O2 - I was using the PN incoming server and the O2 outgoing server, for several years, on a Windows laptop and an IPhone. O2 are pulling this service in a couple of months following their sale of the broadband business to Sky a couple of years ago, so I need to find an alternative outgoing server. As I'm thinking of switching broadband from Sky back to PN anyway, it seemed logical to start using the PN outgoing email server now. The problem is, I just cant get it to work for outgoing mail, despite numerous variations of configuring it on Android and an IPad - this is POP, not IMAP. Even the tech team at PN, who did their best, talked me though the settings, and could not understand why it it would not work. Incoming email to my PN address is fine, I just cant send mail. The PN webmail works fine, but I prefer to have stuff downloaded to devices. Any thoughts as to what the problem might be, as I want to continue using my PN address?

Unfortunately the outgoing server won't work as you're on a free account Undecided

I can see you raised a thread a while ago (back in 2010) regarding mail accounts and although the free account you're on will let you keep the email address, it'd need to be a mail only account (£1.06 per month) to be able to use the outgoing server.

Ah, that's interesting. Odd that the tech team didn't know that, as I fully explained the position. So if I come back as a PN broadband customer, will I then have access to the outgoing server, and will I be able to retain my original PN username and email addresses?

The logic is based on the IP address you're connecting from so yes, you'd be able to use the relay servers from a Plusnet broadband connection.

That said, if you are returning to PlusNET, you would be able to use the relay server from anywhere if you authenticate using your new account details. The account credentials do not need to be the same for both inbound (IMAP) and outbound (SMTP) servers.  In the situation you describe, you could configure IMAP using the old (non-subscription) account details and use your new account details for the SMTP authentication.
