Can a lost email be found?

Assume I have a Primary email account of abc@abc.plus.com.
If an email was sent to xyz@abc.plus.com but this mailbox hadn't been created and 'catch all' wasn't enabled at the time it was sent, do plusnet still have a copy of the email somewhere and can it be directed somewhere?
The somewhere being a newly created xyz@abc.plus.com mailbox.
If it's possible who would I contact?
TIA.

Re: Can a lost email be found?

The PN server would reject the message as the recipient doesn't exist.  The originator should receive a message from their sending server that the message wasn't accepted.  No copy of the message will exist on either server...

^^^ what pwatson said - if the catchall wasn't enabled and mailbox not created then it should have been rejected and returned to the original sender.

Re: Can a lost email be found?

In fact I don't think the message will leave the sending server. Normally the latter would return it to the Envelope From (sender) address, which typically becomes Return Path on correctly delivered emails.
I think the only information Plusnet would have is an entry in their mail server log recording the connection attempt and the response code.

Correct.
Our inbound servers would reject the message with a 5xx server response:
~$ telnet mx.avasin.plus.net 25

Connected to mx.avasin.plus.net.

Re: Can a lost email be found?

Thanks to everyone for the clear answer, it really is appreciated.
It's what I thought, the sender says he can't resend the original so I guess I'm stuffed.
