Highlight the message containing the attachment(s) (paper clip on the right) and it should show the text in the preview pane (or double-click the message to open it). The names of attached files should be listed along the bottom of the grey header summary. Click a filename and it should open in an appropriate application.
For images there is also an option to display them below the message in Personal Settings (preferences tab)->Displaying Messages. Tick the checkbox and click
Save if you change that setting.
