win98 reinstall problems

I won't go into details, suffice it to say that in trying to solve one problem I've created a cluster of new ones! I reinstalled win98 and now,
1. I've lost windows explorer ( and half my system tools). along with all my files.
2. I need 256 colours but 'settings' only shows me 16 bit & 2 colours?
3. Dos can't load what I think is the right windows directory because it can't find win.com.
It's probably all connected in some way but it has me beat. I'm a bit of a novice anyway so any pointers would earn undying gratitude.

win98 reinstall problems

Hi there,

If it's a fresh install and you have nothing but the OS on, why not clean format and start again? It may be easier than messing and trying to solve the problems. You will need to download the latest drivers for your video card to get the best resolution.

win98 install

I always find win98 installs better from the hard drive than a cd. Create a new directory called "Restore" or something similar, (not "windows" ).

Copy the cd to this new directory and then the install program from there. It seems to be a more stable install than from the cd drive.

It works for me, might be worth a try
