This can usualy be done through a setting within the BIOS of the computer.

Depending on why you wish to disable it, it may be simpler to just set any new soundcard to be the default for all tasks within the multi-media setup screens.

Yes, as Philip has said, you should be able to do it from the BIOS... look for something like "Enable AC97 Audio" (by which you select "no").

Where is the BIOS you disable it, will depend on your BIOS.

The best bet is to download the manual for your motherboard for lists of the settings.

As for seting the default sound device, this around about the same for Win98 and XP.

In Windows 98, goto "Control panel" -> "Multimedia".
On Windows XP, goto "Control panel" -> "Sound and audio devices"

Goto the Audio tab
Select the defaults from the lists provided.

In XO, this would apply to voice too.

If you disable it in the BIOS, windows should automaticly set the new defaults.
