Try net send.

Open a dos window (run > cmd)

And type net send [pcname] [message]
eg:

Both PCs running XP?

IP address should also work.
eg:
net send 192.168.0.2 test message

what error did net send throw back?

If both machines are XP/NT then it sounds like the problem is that the Messenger service isn't enabled. To enable this :

    1) Click "Start" > "Control Panel"

    2) Double click "Administrative Tools"

    3) Double click "Services"

    4) In the window that opens, scroll down the list until you find "Messenger"

    5) Click "Start the service".

This will set the service to always start when the machine is turned on.

By turning this on, you may begin to receive "spam" messages which appear in popups. Just making sure you're aware of a possible consequence Smiley

This has been enabled on my PC. I've never had spam. Are there any what other possible consiquences?

Not that I know of, I've only ever received 2 spam messages from it. I think if you have a router, they won't come through.

net send used to work fine between my two XP machines on my LAN. I use it all the time on the LAN at work as well.

i've found that sending a message from Winpopup to an XP machine displays as a Messenger service popup. Not sure if it works the other way round though (winpopup loaded on the 98 pc and net sends from the XP machine) :?
