is sata II backwards compatible

I have a m/b which has 2 sata connectors and I'm considering moving from ide to sata. The h/d s I see on the web are sata 2; 150; 300 etc. Are these newer drives backwards conpatible with the original sata.

It really depends on the motherboard but most of the hard drives have a jumper which makes it sata 1 compatible.
Certainly my Samsung Spinpoint did

Yes, they ALL are, all SATAII / SATA2 chipsets can be used with standard SATA drives, just like SATAII drives can be used on all SATA chipsets. they are interchangable. Just on the SATA2 drive-> sata1 connection you only egt 150MB/s not 300MB/s
