dissapearing ram

I have Cacheman installed & an icon on taskbar displays free ram. when installing programs I notice that the ram count goes down as the instalation takes place. i.e. I start off with around 780 meg ( I have 1 gig) but it drops to around 120 if installing a large program & then jumps back up as install finishes. instalation seems rather slow also. ( win XP )
I have had this problem before but a clean hardrive cured it but now it has returned.
anyone got ideas how to fix this ?

It is not clear from your post what problem you have. Your thread title says dissappearing ram but your post just mentions ram reducing when an install takes place which is perfectly normal.

Can you explain what you are asking help for?

Also XP does not need any additional ram management, it can handle things perfectly well on it's own, unlike Win9x/Me which was terrible at reclaiming ram from badly written apps.

Are you sure that installing programs on the hardrive also loads into memory at the same time? I am advised elsewhere that this is not as it should be & that the ram count should remain more or less constant.
Installing a certain game which should take a couple of minutes takes 10 -15 minutes at present whilst on our other PC ( same spec) it loads normally 2.5 minutes & ram count stable.
Also note that whilst playing BF1942, the game becomes slower & slower & as the game quits I get a quick glimpse of the taskbar count just before it unloads & it is in the red showing 40 meg or so, why is it taking all this ram? 1gig DDR 333 , Asus A7S333, AMD 2400, Ti4600
definately something wrong
