What's Firewire?

I'm thinkig of getting an iPod and see that you need a firewire connection with your pc. What is it?! And how do I know if I've got one!

What's Firewire?

Firewire is also known as IEEE 1349. It is a connector type that may be available on the front and/or rear of your computer case, designed to deliver high speed connections to pereferals like the iPod or external Hard disk drives.

Take a look at THIS image. The bottom type images are what you need on your computer.

You have two further options however.

1: Purchase a seperate firewire PCI card for your system. £16 +P&P HERE

2: Purchase the seperate USB2 cable. This will work on a USB 1.1 machine, but at slower speed. I suggest using a USB2 port if you have one, or adopting option 1, possibly getting a USB2 card instead.

Firewire cards are about £4-6 on ebay often with a cable. Local shops charge £20 for a card and £16 for a cable
