Hey all, I just got to uni and now I can only GET my mail, i can not post back to the senders as it will not connect to mail.plus.net ( i guess its a security thing?) Is there any way i can use my mail accounts via POP3 now? or do i have to use the web interface?

ports that are allowd are :

http://www.kent.ac.uk/is/computing/sbs/availableservices.html

as you can see 110 is open so I can only suppose its a PN restriction?

Yes, you must do what it says on the Kent Uni web site, ie change your default outgoing mail server from relay.plus.net to whatever the UNI's mail server is on their local network. If you need more advice then you should contact the local UNI techy!! It will depend on if they allow mail to be sent out through their system.

Think Kents outgoing server is smtp.kent.ac.uk.

I have a couple of ideas for you

Hey, they do allow port 22 ssh
you can make a tunnel back to my linux box (on plusnet)
set up a proxy in your web browser and get access to the forums.
you can tunnel any protocol through ssh ;-)

I can teach you how to do this and give you an account

please mailsupport@xylene.com for the free account
www.xylene.com (linux community / free hosting etc)

ask support to pass me your details and I'll send you full instructions on how to do this tunnel, its quite easy.

The other idea is does plusnet have a proxy server, that requires you to log in ?

just my 2 cents

Cheers

J.
