a swap file is just that, it swaps data around and stores it.. just like RAM

yes, you can open it in a hex editor and see whats inside, lots of passwords and stuff.. good insecurity going on Smiley

you can turn off swap files under properties of my computer

I'd be careful about switching off your swap file, as someone software requires the swap file even if you've got massive amounts of ram.

I have a hex editor but I do not know what the name of the swap file is, can someone tell me please.

I have trawled through the google references to Swap file and most of them are only coincerned with making it a fixed size or letting it remain flexible and there does not seem to be a definitive answer to that.

I have no intention of turning it off but I want to look at it as part of some research that I am doing. I just need to know the name of the file and its extension.

The file is call 'pagefile.sys' in the root of C: by default.

You can move which drives the swap file is on via the control panel.

You will have to go into folder options and make sure you can see all hidden and system files before you will be able to find it
