SmartLinkService & Windows XP Hard Disk Locking Problems

Hi All,

Has anyone heard of the "SmartLinkService" in Windows XP and even better knows what it does? Do I need it? Can I disable it?

It just it keeps crashing with an invalid state of 0. (recorded in event log)

Secondly I've been having problems with my computer, just locking up when performing heavy I/O access, for example when performing a full virus or trojan scan, spyware etc.

It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does. The mouse and keyboard still react but window's just sits there and the hard disk records no activty.

I've run trojan scans with Trojan Hunter, Virus Scans and Spyware scans and come up clean.

When it locks, nothing seems to be recorded in the event log, other than SmartLinkServce has failed with invalid state of 0. But I'm not sure if the two problems are related.

Thanks in advance,

GB

Have you an Aztech Labs modem installed? Never heard of it before but a bit of detective work links it to slserv.exe, a modem driver component.

I do, but I don't use it as I've got a router.

Does this mean I can disable it? I've not been able to find anything on the service and it doesn't list any details against it.

slserv.exe is usualy found in Windows/System32 folder, not
sure exactly what it does you can try moving it and see.
The symptoms you describe can be a memory issue,
run Memtest86
to check your memory out.
You can disable the modem via Control Panel / Hardware /
Device Manager.

They appear to be by two different organisations
Memtest86 3.1.a is dated 11/3/04 and Memtest+ 1.11
is dated 17/2/04, which one is best ?

If you read the website's History section you will see that memtest86+ is an enhanced and bug-fixed version of memtest86 - i.e. someone has taken the original version source code and released a new version with a new version number and name (to differentiate from the original) so it runs on current hardware like the AMD64.

memtest86+ is the latest and best version. It still has bugs and does not work on some ASUS mobos due to BIOS issues but that is the one you should be using now.

I read it, but a competitor would call their product
an improvement, I'll give it a go since you recommend it.

Ok, well I've disabled the smart link service, no problems as a result of that.

I've run the memory test and it passed every test.

As for the modem, it's an onboard modem and if I disable it, either within windows or via the bios, then I lose my network card as well
I don't understand it, but the moment it's disabled then I can't connect to the net.

Going foward, I'm just going to try and get the machine to lock up again. To see if that's fixed it or not.

Any other ideas?

Cheers,

If you right click on your local disk icon,
choose properties / tools / error checking / check now.
Try re installing your drivers for network card, modem,
re- install and update antivirus. Update operating system,
check for latest motherboard BIOS.
Perhaps if you gave a brief list of PC specs,
motherboard,CPU, etc, type of antivirus used it may jog
someones memory.

Some mobos, when you disable AMR or CNR in bios, will disable both LAN and modem. You will possibly find jumpers on mobo to allow you to be selective be selective. You got manual for mobo?

Alternatively, disable both and fit pci lan card (about £6 for a cheapy!).

I have a spare lan card kicking around, so I could always install that.

Since I disabled that service, it's not locked even when I pushed it. I'm not saying that will have fixed it but it might have. It's just every time it used to lock up, I would get an event log error relating to the service.

As for my drivers, antivirus etc, they are all upto date. As for my PC specs, if I get any more problems within the next few hours. I'll drop them on the post.

Cheers for everyone's help.
