Slow Streaming

I have recently found some free internet TV sites .
some of them are slow to stream.
If I were to upgrade to 2MB from 1MB would this make a difference in the speed of streaming?
(I put this mail on another forum but did not get any replies)

I did meant o attemtp to reply the first time around, but forgot.

It very much depends on the site in question.

Streaming technologies reply on the connection having the abbility to keep up with the pace of the stream itself.

So if you have a 1Mb connection, and the stream is faster than this, then 1Mb isn't suitable. However, is the stream of a speed that 2Mb could cope with too?

Many streams on the internet will happaly work over a 1Mb line. The problem is the peering situation. This is the path accross the internet, it needs to take to your computer. If there is any sort of congestion on this path, it is slow or simply isn't capable of the speeds required, then now ammount of speed changes will help your situation.

What speed (bitrate) is the video stream rated at?

Thank you for your help on this, acarr.
I am not sure which ones are slow to download but most of them have bitrates from 350 to 750, I think, although I will go back and confirm.
I would have thought that these bitrates are not too fast for our setup but I have to admit that I don't totally understand this aspect. Do you think that the bitrates are OK to download at 1MB? At 1MB the download speed is around one-eighth i.e. about 120 Bytes/sec.

@Phil (morrisinc)
I actually purchased access to these free TV sites.
The access was sent to me by email and included the 'rights to sell them'!!!
Without giving too much away (and I know that it is not allowed here to pursue business, rightly so) I paid for the access through Paypal. It was so cheap there cannot be much profit in the business!

At 350Kb, a 512Kb line will manage it, at 750Kb your 1Mb line should handle it.

What results do you get from a ADSL Guide speed test?

A 1Mb line should hit the 960Kb mark for actual speed. Mine hits the 902 mark untweaked.

This is more than enough to hit the 750Kb stream.

The fact these are Free Access streams is one downside to it. In that they may not have the required routing to give you a good feed, they are based outside the UK in such a place that it bad anyhow or that they are overloaded because they are Free.

One thing you could do, is to post a WinMTR trace result to the server streaming the feed (mask the hosts if your concerned).

Hi Philip. thanks again for your input.

I just did a speed test which same out at 979kbps = 122 KBps download speed.
I was informed a while ago by Customer Services that the 979kbps can be misleading to customers because it denotes kiloBITS not kiloBYTES.
The download speed is therefore 122 kilobytes per sec.
I hope I have understood this correctly!

I think that your comment about traffic on the line is a valid one. It is because it is free that it is likely to be highly visited. I know that some of the free Football sites urge you to get an early connecion to the site because of this!

Free Internet TV

Thanks for the link. But it seems to be quite restricting in its programing.
I have access to over 800 world TV stations, including 484 Broadband Sttations.
Try this , as an example. You need Real Player and Broadband connection.
